The 78th Annual Golden Globes Round Up 2021

Tinsel & Tine’s

RECAP of the Hollywood Foreign Press Night of Awards

by Le Anne Lindsay, Editor

As COVID marches on with vaccines not yet wide spread enough to turn the tide in this pandemic, the Globes went 90% virtual giving us a screen within a screen glimpse of celebrity’s families, friends, homes and most of all pets!

Most stayed formal for Zoom, particularly the women, like Anya Taylor-Joy‘s fabulous bit of old Hollywood Veronica Lake look. She had a full on photo shoot, COVID be damned. I’m sure she and her publicist were determined to maximize her amazing jump to household name due to the incredibly well-crafted Netflix Limited Series THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT.

And Elle Fanning nominated for THE GREAT Hulu TV Series
was stunning in ice blue.

But I also totally approved of Jodi Foster accepting her Golden statue for her role in THE MAURITANIAN in silk PJ’s and bare feet.  It seemed entirely fitting for this ceremony.  I think someone should have worn a sexy negligee with an open Marabou accented robe and matching high heeled slippers.  Too bad it was the first year without Modern Family, cause Sofia Vegara could have pulled that off.

But let’s go back to the beginning of the night.  I was watching what can’t be called red carpet exactly, but preshow gallery commentary and virtual actors on actors interviews on Golden Globe’s Twitter. Then at 7pm a similar preshow came on NBC with hosts Susan Kelechi Watson & Jane Lynch, so I’d watch one and mute the other depending on who was being featured.

All the while indulging in …

I didn’t really eat all of this! But made a good dent.  I was so happy to find Cheesecake Factory’s brown rolls in the grocery store. According to Google they’ve been available since 2018, where have I been?  Went perfectly with the Rotisserie Chicken Salad from Fresh Grocer, which was excellent, not too much mayo or too little, seasoned well, white meat. Would definitely get that again.  Some stuff I already had for a Virtual Charity BINGO Game I attended on Friday night and was left over.

During this past year, I’ve probably set food in a grocery store maybe 3x for quick runs, wine shop once, hadn’t been to Trader Joes in a full year. But since I was force to do a lot of things outside the house this past week (too long a story) and hadn’t really figured out my “GG picnic” in time to order and have delivered. I just shopped the old-fashioned way. It felt good to browse around in the stores and actually pick things up. Hope I don’t regret it.

Golden Globe Hosts 2021

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler usually host favorites were understandably only fine and moderately funny this year, as they had to host in front of few socially distanced and masked Front Line Workers instead of a crowded room of drunken celebrities.  Not to mention, hosting from different coasts, split screen to give the appearance the hosting duo where together, with gags reminding you they very much weren’t.  I felt bad for Sia and Kate Hudson, regarding their controversial movie MUSIC, which I’ve yet to see. Ricky Gervais could get away with Tina Fey’s joke “Sia’s controversial film music is nominated for best international floparooni,” I don’t want to get into it guys but it’s real problematic and Twitter is saying it’s the most offensive casting since Kate Hudson was the weight watcher’s spokesperson.”  But this seemed uncharacteristically mean for the Mean Girls writer.

Golden Globe Awkward Moments and Mess Ups

There were a few, but here were the top 3 of the night:

CONTROVERSY

Despite the world finding out The Hollywood Foreign Press Association doesn’t believe in the existence of black journalists, black people were front and center from hosts, to ambassadors, presenters and Winners!

Best Dressed Golden Globe Presenter

Even without an official red carpet we still got to see the presenters dressed on stage…

I liked this gold chain-mail Alberta Ferretti gown on Tiffany Haddish, who rightly so, is still sporting close cut hair.

Worst Dressed Overall Golden Globes 2021

Maya Rudolph in this Valentino Hawaiian Moo Moo thing.
She’s almost always on my Worst Dressed list.

THE CAROL BURNETT AWARD

Given to 98 year-young Norman Lear who had a hand in so many of the shows I frequently revisit, especially this last year, they became the equivalent of comfort foods: All in the Family, Good Times, One Day at A Time, Maude, Sanford and Son

THE CECIL B. DEMILLE AWARD

Went to another favorite Jane Fonda of course she would wonderfully use her speech to talk about bettering society and addressing issues of diversity.  I’ve always admired Jane Fonda, not the least of which, because she always remains herself, never shrinking down into a little old lady. If some people can do this, why can’t we all? Yes, we all age, but obviously women like Jane Fonda, Bernadette Peters and Helen Mirren teach us we don’t have to get old.

I love Jane Fonda in her Netflix show Grace & Frankie, but in watching the tribute, I realize I’ve really only seen like 4 or 5 of her movies, so I want to make a point of doing a Jane Fonda Retrospective and catch up on many of her earlier films.

Golden Globes Best Speech of The Night

WILL THE GOLDEN GLOBES RETURN?

Hard to believe there won’t be a 79th Golden Globe Awards. I like that NBC (under pressure) decided to pull the show for 2022 until HFPA gets it together in terms of adding Black journalists and having more integrity overall.  But I’ve been faithfully covering the awards show which sets off the Awards Season for the last 11 years. Maybe next year I’ll start covering the SAG Awards…
