The 77th Annual Golden Globes Round Up 2020

Tinsel & Tine’s

RECAP of the Hollywood Foreign Press Night of Awards

By Le Anne Lindsay, Editor

This year the Globes went Vegan!  Without any meat to sop up all that free flowing champagne, I was expecting a few more Olivia Coleman (The Crown) tipsy type speeches, but for the most part everyone held it together.  The room did seem apprehensive when Joaquin Phoenix took the stage to accept his award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama – Joker  He can be a loose cannon, no alcohol needed, but thankfully he gave a humble and lucid speech.  I didn’t realize the Beyonce not standing controversy until the next day.

Ricky Gervais returning as host for the most part delivered the mean goods we look for – the Felicity Huffman license plate joke was good, but fell flat when he went in for her husband William H. Macy, beloved in Hollywood.  The pedophile movie punchline of The Two Popes, I liked, and ribbing Leo about his taste in young women landed funny.  But what I didn’t think worked was his ennui with the whole event. Most of his shtick gave an air of I’m too good for all this nonsense,  I’m not just here to joke, but rather to judge.

Tinsel & Tine’s Annual Red Carpet Picnic

I didn’t quite go vegan, as my main dish was slow roasted pulled pork, four cheeses nachos w/ black beans, fresh salsa and sour cream, but the salsa included chopped radishes. Plus, I served a Cauliflower Crust Pizza which was surprisingly GOOD! I know they can do a lot with cauliflower these days, but I swear as someone who loves bread more than Oprah, I didn’t think they could make it taste just like traditional thin crust pizza.  I also roasted sweet potatoes, they were just short of being candied, still, compared to other years we really didn’t pig out, and yet everything was super delish. Oh, and can’t forget our cocktail Ryan Reynold’s Aviation Gin and lime.

Tinsel & Tine’s Best Dressed Red Carpet Winners

No surprises, Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren – I’ve awarded these ladies my praise many, many times before on the red carpet. But I think we were all surprised by Kerry Washington! She really is too thin right now, but it works for this half a dress.  By the way, watch American Son on Netflix, it’s a mixed bag of hot button topics piled high, making for an engrossing play on film.

Tinsel & Tine’s Most Horrid Red Carpet Choices

Cate Blanchett once could do no wrong, but now this is the 2nd time she’s just tried to do too much from head to toe.  How did Gwyneth‘s teenage children allow their mother to leave the house in this monstrosity?  The memes comparing Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) dress to Baby Yoda are spot on 🤣

THE CECIL B. DEMILLE AWARD

This year the lifetime achievement Cecil B. Demille Award went to Tom Hanks the “nicest guy” in Hollywood, which he told Savannah Guthrie on the Today Show, he doesn’t mind kind, but hates to be described as nice, it’s too bland.  Hank can be called a lot of things, but bland is not one of them.  We all choked up when he got misty acknowledging his long time wife, Rita Wilson and beautiful children.  Some of his speech went into old man rambling territory, but he still did a far finer job than the year Denzel Washington couldn’t string two words together.

Best Speech of The Night

There we absolutely no hijinx, no bits, or surprises, which is odd, not even a memoriam, Renee Zellweger taking home the prize for her role as Judy Garland in Judy, was the only person who had to be given the music cue and really it wasn’t very long, she just took a moment to get her stride.  But I’d say everyone else came in on or under time, which allowed the show to end precisely at 11pm, no overage.

Kate McKinnon nearly took best speech of the night, honoring Ellen DeGeneres, who was given the 2nd Annul Carol Burnett Excellence in TV Award. McKinnon, a lesbian, thanked DeGeneres for not only making her believe she could belong on television, but to feel she had a right to belong in the world. I”m paraphrasing, but it was a very moving.

However, the best speech of the night had to go to Michelle Williams, Award for Best Performance by an Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television – Fosse/Verdon  (Such a Good series – Watch it!)  William’s frank and forthright talk of a woman’s right to choose is one of the best I’ve heard on the subject. But it was her reminder to women to vote in our own self-interest as it’s what men have been doing for years, that really struck a chord.

So with all that being said, it would be shallow of me to make mention of her terrible maternity safety orange sac cloth, held together by an oddly blue scroungy.  I wouldn’t do that, which is why she wasn’t put on my horrid red carpet list 😉

And I’ll just end here with my favorite shot of the night. Sexy as hell Jason Momoa stripped down comfortable like he’s in his own living room.
