Philly Restaurant – Flying Carpet Cafe & Bar

Stumbled upon an oasis in the desert yesterday, a real treasure of a spot called Flying Carpet Cafe & Bar.  Located in the triangular apex of 19th & Poplar (1841 Poplar Street).  The vibe inside is wonderfully chill, with a slightly Moorish decor. Owner Kevin Young, is at least partly of Middle Eastern decent and a lot of the menu reflects this flavor, offering Mediterranean Tapas, Vegan Flying Falafel, Exotic Teas and Baklava.

He created the signature sandwich I tried called Captain’s Breakfast ($6) – Scrambled eggs with turkey bacon, spinach, horseradish cheddar cheese, roasted red peppers on a everything bagel smeared with Dijon mustard – 3 Tines (* Excellent – 4 Tines / * Great – 3 Tines / * Good – 2 Tines / * Fair – 1 Tine / * Poor – Tarnished)

I was enjoying the sandwich with coffee, but Kevin insisted to truly enjoy the sandwich it must also be accompanied with tangerine juice and proceeded to pour me a complimentary glass. He was right, I’m neutral on OJ, but tangerine juice is a whole new look at this citrus beverage.

 The Cafe has only been open a little over a month and already seems to be a hang out for a mix of types in the neighborhood.  He supports local artists, presently displaying work by Rachel Blythe Udell and Bonnie Macallister who’s an organizer with the Women’s Caucus for Art, Philly chapter. I’m planning to bring some of my work to show Kevin, in hopes of getting on the rotation of artists.

Flying Carpet is also a full service bar, serving until 1 or 2am if enough people are hanging out. A few neighboring young females (legal age) are trying to get a Thursday night Karaoke going. I was going to check it out, but I think I’m in for the night.  Just got Infamous from Netflix and I was out drinking last night on The New Spirit of Philadelphia (for free) that post is still to come!
