Tinsel & Tine: Annual Oscars Round Up 2021

93rd Academy Awards

This @IndieWire reviewer Ben Travers got a lot right, but I’ve gotta disagree on a number of points –

“Oscars 2021 Review: Steven Soderbergh’s Intimate Insiders’ Awards Show Falls Apart”

T&T: This title makes it seem like the show was a disaster, which it wasn’t and his review doesn’t prove that it was. So that title was just for click bait.

“After a stellar, stylish start that saw Regina King stride through the 93rd Academy Awards’ new home at Union Station — captured in cinematic 2.35:1 letterbox — the 2021 Oscars slowed down, backed up, and eventually collapsed under its own weight.
T&T: True. Regina starting the show off in her ice blue Louis Vuitton winged dress, striding into Union Station was cinematic; yet the show did not sustain this level of engagement, but then again, that happens at the regular Oscars too.

“This year’s theme was “Stories Matter” but their clear vision of what an Oscars ceremony should look like didn’t mesh with what makes for an entertaining evening for audiences at home”

T&T: Also true, but you’ve got to keep in mind this was The #Oscars for movies which came out in 2020. Hardly anyone saw these flicks and very few of the movies nominated featured stars with household names. So no matter how the show was produced, it wouldn’t have been very entertaining for the casual movie-goer/ streamer.

T&T cont: But for me who gets into all this, I was happy with the background stories and talk of industry connections which prefaced each award category. So much better than the phony banter we usually have to endure from presenters. But I think instead of allowing endless speeches from obscure directors of short films, you could have used the time to do both the personal spoken stories and still showed clips from the films for better engagement.

“Youn grabbed Brad Pitt’s arm. The world swooned”

T&T: Except Pitt seemed awfully distracted. He didn’t seem to hear Youn Yuh-jung say how excited she was to meet him, as when they panned over he seemed confused. Then when she was confused getting off the stage, he starts pointing and gesturing before she finally made her way over to him. I would have expected Brad Pitt to go up on stage and walk the adorable octogenarian backstage.

“The biggest and most glaring omission was out of the producers’ hands. More Film Academy members voted for Anthony Hopkins to win Best Actor than Chadwick Boseman. To be clear, Hopkins is extremely deserving. His work in “The Father” creates some of the most surprising, detailed, and moving movie moments in a truly storied career. What’s upsetting isn’t that he won, it’s that Boseman lost”

T&T: True. Just seeing Boseman for a split second in the Memoriam wasn’t enough by far. We all wanted to have another chance to mourn this outstanding actor and man as a film industry community. Personally, I still feel like when you accidentally drop your last bite of a good meal on the floor – bereft.

“Which brings us to that ending. The decision to move Best Picture from its traditional slot as the ceremony’s closer took audiences by surprise, though I can’t say that choice, in itself, was a mistake. Whatever film ends up winning the night’s top award typically dominates the morning’s headlines, but just as often, it’s the people who provide the most vivid memories.”

T&T: WRONG!!! BIG MISTAKE! HUGE! The most wrong thing that happened all night was moving the Best Picture Winner from the last award of the night. This didn’t just fly against tradition, it just let the air out of the balloon before we were ready to land! Talk about anti-climatic – seeing Frances McDormand accept her Best Actress award after already howling for Best Picture was ridiculous.

The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony – THE OSCARS –  presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will honor the best films released between January 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021. two months later than originally planned, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema.

The Oscars will air Sunday, April 25th on ABC

Nominations were announce by the oddly matched, but adorable husband and wife team: Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.  Typically I like to do an annual Oscars Prediction post as, although I may not see all the shorts in the various short film categories and I may only get to see 3 of the 5 International films, I usually see every other film with a nomination, (with the exception of a few War movies I decline to see). But of course this year, due to COVID-19 there are movies with nominations that I not only didn’t see, but never heard of!

First I’m hearing of a live action PINOCCHIO, not made by Disney. Usually even if I haven’t seen all the International films I’ve heard the titles, but I have no knowledge of ANOTHER ROUND, THE COLLECTIVE, or any in this category. Never heard of doc THE MOLE AGENT or animated film A SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE. Don’t know LOVE AND MONSTERS OR THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN, I do know about HILLBILLY ELEGY but as much as I love Ron Howard I could not bring myself to watch this…

Thankfully, I have watched all 8 BEST PICTURE Nominees.  Below are my predictions made on Twitter:

Winner: COLETTE

Winner: IF ANYTHING HAPPENS I LOVE YOU

Winner: TOO DISTANT STRANGERS

Winner: MANK

Winner: SOUND OF METAL

Winner: TENET

Winner: SOUND OF METAL

Winner: MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM

Winner: Eric Messerschmidt – MANK

Winner: CHLOÉ ZHAO

Winner: SOUL

Winner: MY OCTOPUS TEACHER

Winner: ANOTHER ROUND

Winner: DANIEL KALUUYA

What films with Oscar Noms have you seen? What are your predictions?
