Commentary – THE BALLAD OF GENESIS AND LADY JAYE

    April 1, 2012 /

Have you ever heard the term “Pandrogyny”?  Neither had I until I saw the documentary film The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye. Filmmaker Marie Losier documents this unusual love affair between an underground, industrial music front man/woman – Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and his/her better half – Lady Jaye.  The two meet through a mutual dominatrix acquaintance and fall madly in love. So in love that Genesis and Lady Jaye decide rather than having a child (of which Genesis has two from a previous relationship) they would reform themselves into each other and therefore, symbolically, create one new person = Pandrogyny. The idea sounds like sick, obsessive love, yet strangely…

    Philly Dining – HAWTHORNES CAFE

    April 1, 2012 /

Hawthornes Cafe (738 11th Street) describes themselves as a beer boutique and gourmet eatery.  So far, I’ve only been twice for brunch. Although, I did order a Duvel Belgian Ale my last visit, and found it to be far too bitter for a morning libation. The restaurant is owned by Chris Fetfatzes, whose family runs Bella Vista Beer Distributors (755 S. 11th St.) So the ample selection of beers and ability to fill up your growlers seems to be a large selling point, but the waiting list for brunch attests to an appealing menu and good food. Rating System: * Excellent – 4 Tines / * Great – 3 Tines…

11th Annual LunaFest Short Films Festival

    March 3, 2012 /

If you consume powerbars, you’ll no doubt be familiar with Clif and Luna bars, but you may not know this same company is in the film biz. In 2000 they created LunaFest a short film festival by, for and about women. It’s a traveling, one night film festival; this year (Friday, March 2, 2012) one of the stops was Chestnut Hill, PA (30 minutes outside Center City Philadelphia for any non-local readers). One of Tinsel & Tine’s missions is to highlight film and food events around the city; this one was of particular interest because it was located in my own backyard, and served as a community fundraising event. Here’s…

    Commentary – TOAST

    October 20, 2011 /

This same excitement and enthusiasm for all things culinary would follow Nigel Slater into adulthood and into British celebrity.  The film Toast is the early biography of Slater's life growing up in Wolverhampton, England with a very sweet, but sickly mother, who relied heavily on serving toast for meals when her meager attempts at preparing dinner would turn out unappetizing and often inedible...

Tinsel & Tine’s Dreams and Schemes

    August 21, 2011 /

Tinsel & Tine’s facebook fan page had reached 99 Likes! With the plethora of blogs out there, this was no easy feat. Upon reaching 93, I had started thinking about putting together some kind of dinner and a movie give-away for the person that was my 100th Like. The pros of writing a blog is that you don’t have to answer to, or collaborate with, anyone. The cons being you must do everything yourself: attend events, gather and write content, market/promote and figure out long-term goals and strategy. So before I had the chance to contact restaurants and distributors and sell them on the idea of giving me a gift…
