Empire Talk Week 9: Unto the Breach (Fox TV)

Quick Recap/Highlights and Around the Web with Empire

Only 3 more episodes left of Empire Season 1. I think Twitter is going to miss it most!

I couldn’t fit in a post recapping last week’s “The Lyon’s Roar”; but next week is called “Sins of the Father”, boy is that fitting; after that it looks like a two hour season finale, because “Die But Once” and “Who I Am” are both scheduled to air on March 18th.

Last night started with a bang! I didn’t expect Cookie and Porsha to storm into Lucious’ house like that and just out Boo Boo Kitty as a traitor!  I almost forgot about the scene, in Episode 7 where Anika approaches Porsha in the elevator and bribes her to spy on Cookie.  Alright Porsha! Even though Cookie don’t always appreciate her like she should, Porsha turned the spying tables on Anika and found out she was fraternizing with the enemy – Creedmore founder Baretti (Judd Nelson).

But from there, I was a little lost in the frenzy of activity. It was like Wall Street on Empire, but instead of trading stocks, it was about trading artists.  What I do know – hilarious when Cookie goes to the hood to secure one of their artists and has to prove her street cred by drinking everyone under the table, finishing a bottle of some ol’ Mad Dog 20/20 type hooch.  Then gets mugged coming out of the studio, but rescued by her little crush, Malcolm (Derek Luke) the security expert. Then drunk Cookie with her booted legs spread wide in the back seat of the limo, offering Malcom, “Take these cookies” – Classic!

The guest star of this episode was British singer-songwriter Estelle (see header image), who played Delphine, Jamal’s contribution to the whole getting, keeping, swapping artists war with Creedmore. Estelle & Jussie Smollett’s duet of “Conqueror,” was good – strong tune. Anyway, Lucious at first dismisses Delphine, only because he’s still holding a grudge against Jamal for coming out while performing “You’re So Beautiful” last week, by changing the song’s lyrics. And what about that explicit hand gesture during the” up down, up down” part of the song!?!

I love that Jamal is the only son that really knows how to stand up to Lucious.  He just tells him what’s what and keeps moving.

Where as Hakeem, is all up under Lucious, and poor Andre is always trying to prove himself.  Last night Dre showed every level of his bipolar-ness  – one moment knowing exactly what to do and say, then the next minute losing it, buying cars with the “artist relations money”; and I would not have wanted to be Hakeem or Jamal stuck in that dark elevator with a sweating and out of control Dre.  Thank God music does tame the savage beast.

Hakeem was like, Empire or no Empire, sorry Tiana, I don’t want you back like that.

I do have to admit to feeling just a little bad for Anika when it looked like Hakeem was trying to get her to come back to Empire, when really he was just playing interception so Cookie had time to meet with Tiana first.  Anika looked genuinely hurt by her almost stepson’s betrayal.

Well, those are the highlights, but check out local Philly actress/writer/model Kharisma doing a Cookie impression for a Fox 29 segment on Empire Fashion:

Mo’Nique Says Lee Daniels Wanted Her To Play Cookie On TV Hit ‘Empire’

Mo’Nique explained to INSIDE EDITION’s Les Trent that the show’s creator, Lee Daniels, who directed her in her Oscar winning role in Precious, wanted her to play Cookie. Mo’Nique said Daniels even sent her a script. “Maybe four days had gone by, and I hadn’t heard anything. So I’m trying to reach out to him to say, what time do I need to be in? Where do I need to be? When he finally returned the call, he says listen, the executives at Fox said that you’re difficult….” See Video on Inside Edition

I kinda think Mo’Nique would have over played Cookie, plus half the fun of the show is the chemistry between Cookie & Lucious, can’t see that with Mo’Nique, no offense, cause big girls are sexy too, but Terrence and Taraji are on fire!
