David O. Russell Brings Us Great Characters & Hair: AMERICAN HUSTLE

    December 19, 2013 /

The built in buzz for American Hustle is of course the fact that writer/director David O. Russell, still basking in the commercial and award winning success of both The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook is once again working with 4 actors from those movies – Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. Which makes me wonder, did this brainwash me prior to my screening or did I really love the movie? American Hustle is very loosely based on the Abscam FBI sting operation of the 1970s that ensnared seven members of Congress for taking bribes. During this time, the FBI really did hire a convicted con artist…

    Tribeca Film: SPARROWS DANCE

    August 25, 2013 /

by Le Anne Lindsay, Editor Sparrows Dance, written and directed by Noah Buschel, has the thoughtful sensibility of a foreign film – the structure, the coloring and handling of the film felt as if I should be reading subtitles.  The protagonist (Marin Ireland) suffers from the panic disorder, agoraphobia.  I call her the protagonist, because the character is never named. I’m sure there are other movieswith a nameless main character, and if you think of one, please leavea comment, but the only other film that I can think of, is my very favorite – Hitchcock’s Rebecca. So “She” hasn’t left her apartment in over a year, we see her on her…

A Comical look at a True Story, Pain & Gain isn’t Funny to Some – Guest Writer Christopher Norris

    April 26, 2013 /

If you've never read the story of the “Sun Gym Gang” as chronicled by writer Pete Collins in his 1999 three-part series called Pain & Gain, which was published by Miami’s New Times, then don't rely on Director Michael Bay's New movie...

Buffet: The Incredible Burt Wonderstone / Stoker / The Call

    March 15, 2013 /

I got to attend screenings Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week! The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Stoker and The Call. I’d like to do an essay on each of them, particularly Stoker; but as all three open this weekend, there just isn’t time.  So, I’ve written a 30 second review and included video interviews, which speak to the heart of each film, without giving too much away… The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (Director Don Scardino) – is the right vehicle for the comedy stylings of both Steve Carell and Jim Carey. Carell as Wonderstone, gets to do that obtuse, self-aggrandizing, but deep down I’m a good guy thing – as his…

    ARGO (Ben Affleck)

    October 12, 2012 /

by James Bradford, Guest Critic (and boyfried 🙂 Ben Affleck has proven to me that he is a true talent, and that talent, lies behind the camera. Gone Baby Gone ranks among one of the top child abduction movies. Not only did it keep you guessing; but the gritty, questionable protagonist, played with amazing truth by Amy Ryan, gave the movie remarkable originality. The Town brought heart to the heist movie franchise. With super great chase scenes and that authentic Boston flavor. And now Argo successfully manages to keep us glued to a plot in which we already know the outcome. The Hollywood element to this film is not only…
