    Commentary – Country Strong

    January 6, 2011 /

So after the PFS preview of Country Strong on Wednesday night, I was discussing the film with a staff member who felt the movie was too song oriented. I could tell he was not a Country Music fan, so I agreed with him and said I feel the producers of the film were more interested in selling a soundtrack than making a good movie, which I truly feel. What I didn’t say, was that I would be one of the people looking to buy said soundtrack. I was already on YouTube yesterday watching the music video of Gwyneth marching around in her red cowboy boots to the title track. And…

Commentary – True Grit, The Tourist, How Do You Know

    December 28, 2010 /

I never liked John Wayne. His tough as nails, “The Duke” appeal never found resonance with me. The only Western I ever liked was Kenny Rogers in The Gambler. Yet, I can honestly say, I was very taken in by The Coen Brother’s remake of True Grit. I don’t know if the original movie had such bombastic and articulate dialogue, or hilarious statements of the obvious, but this artfulness was a good part of this movie’s appeal for me. It’s also less shoot’em up and more road comedy. Jeff Bridges is a hoot as one-eyed Rooster Cogburn and new comer, Hailee Steinfeld, Mattie Ross, puts the truth in True Grit.…

    Commentary – Rabbit Hole

    December 16, 2010 /

by Le Anne Lindsay, Editor Why would someone with a 2 1/2 year-old want to make a film about losing a young child in an unforeseeable fatal accident? I just saw an interview with Nicole Kidman where she muses, as a left-handed person, at times her approach to the world can be uncommon, not only literally, but intellectually and creatively. She likes to delve into her worst fears and make herself do things that make her uncomfortable. As a fellow lefty, I think I can relate, it’s why I’m blogging and Christmas shopping and getting my eyebrows professionally waxed when I should be in a fit of despair and panic…

    NY Restaurant – Veselka

    December 13, 2010 /

I was hanging out in the East Village this past weekend and we went to a popular Ukrainian comfort food mecca – Veselka. I had a Pierogi feast – filling assortments included: short rib, ham & gruyère, arugula & goat cheese, sweet potato, sauerkraut & mushroom, traditional potato and more! They’re awesome by themselves but when you top them with the sour cream and diced fried onions… sheer enjoyment! 3 Tines/4 Tines for short rib pierogi. Next time I’m back in this area of NYC, I’m going to go for the Lamb & Feta burger w/ roasted red pepper relish. The Veselka Cookbook seems like a very good Christmas gift…
