Help Restore the Roxy! Supporting The Philadelphia Film Society
The Philadelphia Film Society, the organization which produces the annual Philadelphia Film Festival, will assume operations and reopen the Roxy Theater located in Philadelphia’s historic Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. It will operate as a first-run independent theater, providing festival-type films all year long. The Roxy is due for a facelift, as it has not undergone major building maintenance, upgrades to seating, wall treatments, or carpeting for countless years. Projection updates are also needed, to make the necessary transition from 35mm film projection to digital. In order to attract patrons, the Roxy needs to be welcoming, clean, and state-of-the-art. HOME BREWING with Melissa B
Although Chili and Beer go great together, this is not the same Melissa featured in my Chili Cook Off Contest post. I met this Melissa at a Media Beer Ladies event at Yards Brewing Company. The Media Beer Ladies (facebook page) run by Brooke Penders is a club which combines two beloved traditions: girls night out and drinking great beer! With our Yards tour and tasting complete, we each selected a full glass of our favorite beer (mine the dark, chocolaty Love Stout) and sat down to get to know each other. Melissa revealed that she recently began brewing her own beer at home. Something she figured as a Microbiologist,…

Love this Craig LaBan Article on Philly Dining Scene
Image: Philly.com …In the two years he’s been back, Lawler has learned how to keep his guests happy: “People in Philly don’t care if it’s new or never been done before,” Lawler says. “They’re spending their own money [versus expense accounts], and they want the food to taste good. That might sound obvious, but it has nothing to do with the level of refinement or sophistication. They want a pleasant meal and they don’t want fluff. They want substance.” READ MORE Philly Food Blog

Buffet: The Incredible Burt Wonderstone / Stoker / The Call
I got to attend screenings Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week! The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Stoker and The Call. I’d like to do an essay on each of them, particularly Stoker; but as all three open this weekend, there just isn’t time. So, I’ve written a 30 second review and included video interviews, which speak to the heart of each film, without giving too much away… The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (Director Don Scardino) – is the right vehicle for the comedy stylings of both Steve Carell and Jim Carey. Carell as Wonderstone, gets to do that obtuse, self-aggrandizing, but deep down I’m a good guy thing – as his…

I Wanted Flying Monkeys, Not Flying Baboons: OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL
by Le Anne Lindsay, Editor There is no way anyone is going to be able to discuss Disney’s epic Oz the Great and Powerful without discussing their childhood memories of The Wizard of Oz, so why should I be any different. My older sister used to make us watch The Wizard of Oz every year, which always caused the two sides of my adolescent Gemini personality to be at war. One part was drawn into the magic, fantasy, characters and adventure. The other part of me enjoyed the music, but was terrified by the whole premise of Dorothy being lost somewhere weird and different. I hated that she wasn’t prepared…
