Ya Gotta Try This Philly Tasting – Second Chance Foundation Fundraiser RECAP

Tinsel & Tine was invited to sample more great food in Philly at the Ya Gotta Try This Tasting Party to benefit

Second Chance Foundation

The event took place at the Independence Visitor Center, (One North Independence Mall) and was chaired by Second Chance Foundation Board of  Director Mike Jerrick host of Fox 29′s Good Day Philadelphia. Local readers may be familiar with Mike’s weekly “Ya Gotta Try This” segments on Good Day Philadelphia, where he visits local restaurants and eating establishments to try their signature, and sometimes, unusual, dishes. Expanding on this signature theme for a fundraiser was an excellent idea.

The Mission of the Second Chance Foundation is to raise funds to provide
financial assistance and resources to vital community-based
organizations that serve “at-risk” children, young adults, and families
to help them lead more productive lives that promote a safer
Philadelphia.

The Second Chance Foundation, created in January of 2011, was the
brainchild of Philadelphia District Attorney R. Seth Williams. Seth
Williams is a true Philadelphia success story. After being given up by
an unwed mother, Seth was placed in an orphanage and two foster homes
before being adopted by a devoted and loving family. He grew up in a
hard-working West Philadelphia neighborhood, the only child of Imelda
Williams and the late Rufus O. Williams who emphasized the importance of
community service his whole life.

Attendees Gene Miller Rotervich &Wayne Geisser

I spoke to one of Mike’s fellow Board Members at Second Chance,Wayne Geisser, a CPA with Business Consultant firm Smart Devine who emphasized the importance of getting the money out to grassroots organizations which benefit kids in underprivileged neighborhoods, people in homeless shelters, battered women and more.  I asked what’s the criteria for an organization to receive funds? Geisser responded, any organization can apply for a grant as long as they are a 501c3. Second Chance gives out 12-15 grants of varying amounts a year.  Click for Grant Application.

Geisser also said, Jerrick is a very hands on Board President who is high energy and committed to giving back to the community; and that the money raised through Ya Gotta Try This will go a long way in helping the organization meet its goals.
