I was disappointed when the show ended in January of 2019 due to loss of sponsorship, and I think Chuck was ready to pursue other business opportunities. At the same time, although I would have continued to do the show for as long as he wanted me, and I loved the rapport Chuck and I had on the radio; there was a small part of me that was relieved when the show ended, as it was a lot of pressure to prepare a weekly segment. I felt I always brought my A game aiming to be lively, fun and informative, but it meant seeing and researching at least 3 movies a week and keeping up with any breaking movie biz stories; not to mention, practicing my script until it sounded like it was off the top of my head, an important skill in radio.
I’m not sure if any of the below links still work as the site upgraded there website the 2nd year. I also don’t know how long the old episodes, post website upgrade, will stay on the WWDB radio site, but here’s the link to at least a year’s worth of episodes THAT’S SHOW BIZ WITH CHUCK DARROW, I was always the finale!

POST UPDATE I didn’t contribute to the show on 12.13.16 or 12.20.13, but if I had, one of the topics I would have discussed was the Illumination animated movie SING starring Academy Award® winners Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, alongside Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton and Grammy Award-nominated Tori Kelly. Set in a world like ours but entirely inhabited by animals, Sing stars Buster Moon (McConaughey), a dapper koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. Martin Scorsese tells the story of two Christian missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) – at a time when Christianity was outlawed in Japan and anyone found to be a Christian was tortured and persecuted. Scorsese has been trying to make this movie for 27 years I read he’s been obsessed with it. It’s based on a 1966 book by Shusaku Endo. It has its World premiere today at the Vatican.

play, it stars Denzel Washington & Viola Davis.
Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, a former Negro League baseball player, has to become
a trash man and struggles to provide for his family and come to terms with the
events of his life. I saw the play back in my 20’s and really remember very little, but I like that they are bringing a classic play to the big screen.

I didn’t contribute to this week’s show even though it was an hour of movie talk. Chuck invited me to join in the round-table discussion on actors who have portrayed United States Presidents, both fictional and non-fictional. Immediately the movies Frost/Nixon, The Butler, Selma, American President, Mars Attacks, Spielberg’s Lincoln came to mind, but then I thought, what do I want to say about these movies? I felt like I’d have to watch each one again in order to contribute to the conversation. Then I thought, shouldn’t there be some comparison of the real-life President’s and their Administrations to the actors portrayals? This daunted me, cause I’m certainly no Doris Kearns Goodwin. I freaked myself out so much, over thinking the whole thing, that I asked Chuck to go with someone else in my place.

Inferno is the 3rd Dan Brown novel brought to the screen, starring Tom Hanks as Symbologist Robert Langdon, who finds himself in Italy suffering from amnesia and must rely heavily on a puzzle solving physician, (Felicity Jones) to figure out clues to Dante’s Inferno in order to save the world from a Biotech Billionaire’s mission to contaminate half the world’s population using germ warfare in order to save the planet in the long run.
Despite all the sneering from critics, I enjoyed the movie. It’s not as fascinating and Biblical as The DaVinci Code and Angel & Demons (click for T&T post) dealt with the Illuminati which is more intriguing; still, the pacing of Inferno is very good. Was taken in by the character twists. Actor Irrfan Khan (Jurassic World) as the leader of a super-powerful private security firm, is a charismatic standout. And the climax in the bowels of an ancient Turkish labyrinth makes for a fantastic visual.

My favorite Ron Howard movie is actually one most people don’t talk about – RUSH (click for T&T post) which came out in 2013. Set during the 1970’s formula one racing circuit. Rivals James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) as a daring playboy & Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) who’s all precision & skill. Opposites ends of the spectrum, but they make each other better through the rivalry.

In terms of my movie segment I talked about loving Queen of Katwe click for Q&A with David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong’o, Director Mira Nair and new comer Madina Nalwanga. The moon landing hoax movie Operation Avalanche click for my interview with the director and produce Matt Johnson & Matt Miller, and lastly, a movie I’d been looking forward to Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
We also talked about my piece highlighting Philly doc The Billboard Boys (click for post.) which revisits those involved in an Allentown, PA radio station promotion turned media circus back in 1982.

This world we’ve created of branding and self-promotion can be fun and liberating. We’ve been given these fantastic tools: social media, blogs, apps, podcasts, cameras readily at our disposal, so many great ways to communicate our passions; and yet it’s also tough, because we’re all doing it! Which makes it difficult to get to the next level. More than anything else, even more than wanting to find a love interest, I want Tinsel & Tine to be what I do – No other job(s). To get there, it takes consistency, raising my profile and luck, as was the case last Friday…
When Chuck Darrow, long-time Philadelphia journalist of the Inquirer and Daily News, contacted me to start contributing a movie segment to his new radio program on WWDB-Talk Radio 860. He was given my name by Kory Aversa CEO of Aversa PR & Events (by the way Kory is a nominee on the Philly Happening List for 2016 for Entrepreneur of the year – Vote HERE).
The program is call THAT’S SHOW BIZ with CHUCK DARROW the format covers Theater, Restaurants, TV, Music and Movies! Chuck has some great contributors who call into the show and discuss what’s hot that week, with a real slant toward what’s happening in Philly. Our segments are short, due to the hour long format of the show, which includes Chuck’s interview with a celebrity guest.
