Talk Back at the Screen Flick: THE PERFECT GUY

The Perfect Guy – The woman-in-peril thriller shook off bad reviews and placed first with a robust $26.7 million domestic for the opening weekend, a handsome profit on a modest $12 million budget… However, the bigger win may be that Hollywood has reached something of a long-overdue tipping point: Between Straight Outta Compton, War Room, and now The Perfect Guy, the
box office winner has been a film headlined by African American leads
for five weeks in a row. Fittingly, the milestone comes from Screen
Gems, long one of the few places in Hollywood to actively (and
successfully) serve African American audiences… READ MORE by John Lopez Grantland

Quick T&T Synopsis: Leah (Sanaa Lathan) is a successful Lobbyist who lives in a gorgeous, open, glass house. And in that glass house is a gorgeous, open and honest boyfriend Dave (Morris Chestnut). But that’s not good enough for Leah, who claims to be 37, she’s ready for Dave to put a ring on it and get her with child.  Dave’s like, I love you, I wanna be with you, but soon as people make relationships official, things go wrong, so let’s keep things the way they are… this gets Dave booted out of the glass house.  Enter the guy she semi-flirted with at the coffee shop about a month before the Dave breakup – Carter (Michael Ealy) Those eyes, the chiseled jaw (although I think he’s too thin in this movie) he’s fun, sexy, available and ready to commit, only Leah, wants to put the breaks on after she witnesses Carter’s terribly unprovoked violent outburst.

Bottom Line: Yes, we all know the cast is what sold the movie, otherwise David M. Rosenthal has ostensibly directed a Lifetime movie, but one with beautiful production value and rich coloring. The writers Alan McElroy, Alan B. McElroy (story) & Tyger Williams (screenplay) didn’t bother with a twist, you know the whole story just about from the trailer, and it could use a little tightening up. Still, I had fun with it! For a romantic/thriller, it’s never too over the top and you are invested.  Slight Spoiler Alert  – Anybody think Leah eventually ends up with the white cop who gave her the excellent advice?
