INVADE: 5 Questions for Filmmaker Eunice Levis
Eunice Levis: Can you think of any science fiction shows or films that narrate the life of an undocumented person in the United States who is not detained? And yet an estimated 12 million reside here. These people live silent lives, in shadows and limit their potential in an effort to remain undetected – but still they experience emergencies, pandemics and other civil turmoil just like other residents. The subject of immigration and undocumented people in the United States has always been urgent and the rhetoric largely toxic. It is easy to overlook how these people have contributed to the health and wealth of America. I felt compelled to tell…

SERENITY
Tinsel & Tine #MiniMovieReview SERENITY by writer/director Steven Knight (LOCKE) I was looking forward to this movie which looked like a good off-beat noir-ish indie, hopefully with a nice twist and some hot chemistry between Matthew McConaughey & Anne Hathaway. Turns out, it’s a world building sci-fi concept disguised as a bad off-beat noir-ish indie. As the reason.com reviewer Kurt Loder describes it – “it’s two different movie genres, oddly pressed together, like a grilled roach and cheese sandwich”. The only redeeming nature of the film is for McConaughey fans who want to see him spouting existential nonsense, doing light manual labor, often naked or close to it, his still…

ANNIHILATION
For some film buffs Alex Garland is known for his work writing Danny Boyle directed films such as “Sunshine” and “28 Days Later”, not to be confused with “127 Hours” which was written & directed by Boyle. Garland also adapted Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel “Never Let Me Go” starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightly and Andrew Garfield as clones. Definitely one to add to your queue if you haven’t seen it. But most movie-goers only started paying attention to Alex Garland, when he wrote & directed the extraordinary “Ex Machina” (2014) starring Alicia Vikander as a Fembot. Now, he’s adapted the first book in Jeff VanderMeer’s “Southern Reach” trilogy, “Annihilation”, “Authority”, and…
