Spotlight: New Filmmaker Koran Dunbar – Greencastle

    March 5, 2013 /

He's done everything by faith, luck, talent, perseverance and perhaps a little stupidity.  Much of which he wrote and directed into Greencastle, in which he plays the lead, Poitier, a black man living in Greencastle PA, who's a single father and just kinda out of sync with life.  He earns his living working at a pet store, while attending a 2 year online program to earn a certificate in animal care.

AFFRM Launches New Distribution Label ARRAY

    February 28, 2013 /

Ava DuVernay’s AFFRM BECOMES ARRAY “AFFRM’s new label ARRAY is built to serve the tremendous burst of black cinematic talent across the globe, filmmakers who are embracing new technologies to tell their stories by any means necessary,” DuVernay said in a statement. “The goal is to expand the brand cultivated over our first four theatrical releases by reaching new audiences via both digital and traditional platforms,” “Selma” director Ava DuVernay has given an extreme makeover to her 5-year-old distribution company. Previously known as AFFRM (African American Film Festival Releasing Movement), the filmmaker has relaunched and expanded the company as Array. “I’ve always felt as if there were so many films…

The Next Step: Black Filmmaking in Philadelphia

    February 16, 2013 /

I recently attended an event with a whole host of sponsors: The Black Film Advisory Committee, Councilman at-Large David Oh, Reelblack, The Greater Philadelphia Film Office, The City of Philadelphia, Radio One and The Painted Bride Art Center.  The event was called The Next Step: Black Filmmaking in Philadelphia. And also to further examine the on-going challenges of being of color in an industry that is still primarily white.  I was surprised at the turn-out. It looked to be over 200 people in attendance.…

Support AFFRM – Kinyarwanda at select theaters this weekend

    December 2, 2011 /

AFFRM is the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement – empowering black independent filmmakers with collaborative, simultaneous theatrical distribution in multiple markets. Last March AFFRM got behind Ava DuVernay’s  I Will Follow (click for T & T commentary). Giving it a chance to reach a wider audience.  This weekend AFFRM is launching Alrick Brown’s KINYARWANDA. Which I will screen on Sunday. The below video from Reelblack features Brown talking about the film, AFFRM and the state of African American Cinema in general.
