    mother!

    September 17, 2017 /

My first impression of this film by auteur Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) is that it’s wack, self-indulgent and a sheer waste of time. But then, given more time to ruminate on it, break it down, look at the allegories, I did discover some beauty in the madness. But not enough to take the time and energy to put it all down in black and white.  Especially after I discovered this perfectly dissected review on Silver Screen Riots : mother!’ is not the movie you think it is but it remains one of 2017’s most provocative and engaging examples of auteur filmmaking. Captivating and challenging, brutal and bloodcurdling, steeped in madness,…

    David O. Russell’s 8th Movie: JOY

    January 3, 2016 /

Red Wine on Teak Floors = “Joy”   By Le Anne Lindsay, Tinsel & Tine Editor The first thing I liked about JOY, David O. Russell’s latest vehicle starring Jennifer Lawrence, was the trailer. It gave very little away, you knew the protagonist lived with her entire family, including an ex-husband and that she wants them to get behind her on an idea to hopefully get them out of low economic circumstances, but that’s it. The rest of the images could take the story in many different directions, so you walk into the movie, open for anything. I’ve read some of the criticism of  “Joy”, most critics feel…

Here’s What They’re Saying About: THE HUNGER GAMES MOCKINGJAY PART 1

    November 23, 2014 /

For me, The Hunger Games is an alright movie franchise, it probably would hold even less appeal for me if I didn’t like Jennifer Lawrence so much – she’s got a quality that’s part girl from the wrong side of the tracks, without cheap skin or hair; she seems sensible and mature, and at the same time, fun and fresh; she’s got edge without the apathy of a Kristen Stewart.  In other words, she has the presence to carry off a movie that’s mostly production and atmosphere.  I mean, I get the creativity behind Suzanne Collins’ Dystopian world, brought to life by directors Gary Ross and then Francis Lawrence. And…

Jennifer Lawrence in WINTER’S BONE / Q&A with dir Debra Granik

    May 20, 2010 /

How long was the pre-production period?   The actors, Jen and John Hawkes (who played Teardrop) came down a week ahead of time. Jen had to do a lot of work learning how to use the farm machinery and the squirrel skinning. John visited some bars and got recordings of people's voices in the community to learn accents. "This was a crucial part of the production, to have time before rolling to get acclimated and steeped and immersed in the groove."
