Commentary – YOUNG ADULT
Young Adult screening was courtesy of The Philadelphia Film Society’s Sneak Preview Series. I’m certain Patton Oswalt (Spence from King of Queens) never in his wildest dreams thought he’d ever in this lifetime get a chance to have a love scene with Charlize Theron. His romance with Rachel Dratch on the TV series was most likely more romantic action then he’d ever thought to see as a character actor. Surprisingly, it’s the chemistry between these two actors which allows Young Adult to find its footing and like-ability. Surprisingly compelling considering it's basically one man talking into a video camera about frost bite, broken camping stoves, broken skies, whiteout conditions, and calling his wife each night with sometimes incoherent reports of the day.

Intellectually, I know the beauty of a film festival is to see small films, those without distribution yet, documentaries and foreign films. I always have good intentions of puttting these things in my schedule, but for me, it’s kinda like doing laundry – I love fashion and I want to wear clean clothes, but I don’t feel like sorting the wash and going to the basement. JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME Family stuff and life in general is getting in the way of seeing as much as I want, and writing as much as I see. Which is why as great as it is to have a big film festival in your own backyard, it would be better to be here on vacation and experience all the films without so many interruptions.
