SORRY FOR MY LOSS: 5 Questions for Filmmaker
Jared Becker

Contributor Enrico Versace

You ever do something for someone and it was nice for you to do, but you did it to the extent of putting yourself second and becoming something you’re not? Yes, it’s great to be selfless and maybe more people should do that, but not when it’s at the cost of one’s self. But that’s what people do in relationships; sometimes people compromise and it’s fine, or they settle when they shouldn’t.

In the short independent film Sorry For My Loss, screenwriter and actor Jared Becker displays that kind of unwanted compromise that can happen in relationships. Jared plays Aaron Wheeler, an uncompassionate, ambitious executive who craves attention. He’s been with Jane Windhall (Claire Pegram), for 3 years, he thinks they’re on the right path for their future. She’s reluctant and self-sacrificing and seems afraid of being on her own. They both want to move forward in life, and the choices they make this evening may change their lives forever.

These two characters are very different and each scene is meaningful. Comparing how each spends their morning, even down to the kind of cup or mug they choose for their coffee, says a good deal about them. Sorry For My Loss conveys a lot in such a short time and by the end, I for one, felt like I really knew Aaron & Jane.  The music is very effective. The song “Goodbye,” by Jared himself and Steven Esposito for instance, was an original song which really captures the final moments of the film and the emotion each character is feeling. It really rode home the theme of the film, that sometimes it’s better to do what’s best for you, regardless of how hard it is or how it’s going to make the other person feel. For me especially, the film was very relatable. Rejection is often hard on both sides, though one can’t just keep lying to oneself, better to admit unhappiness, stop sacrificing and accept the consequences of moving on.
