Philly Food Truck: DIA DOCE Gourmet Cupcakes

by Le Anne Lindsay, Editor

Last week at my day gig we got an email announcing when Dia Doce Gourmet Cupcakes would be in the parking lot.  Seemed like the perfect opportunity to sample and profile another Food Truck for Tinsel & Tine’s Food Truck Series!

Dia Doce is owned by Thais da Silva and her husband Michael. Their gourmet cupcakes are made from scratch every day with 100% natural ingredients and no artificial flavors. There’s no telling what inventive flavors might be next, but to give you an example of some of their popular, exotic menu items:

Maple Bacon
Maple cake studded with bacon, topped with a real maple syrup and bacon frosting.

Cereal and Milk –
Butter cake with a cinnamon swirl topped with oat crumbles and cereal milk buttercream frosting.

Blueberry Buttermilk PancakeBlueberry pancake disguised as a cupcake topped with maple infused buttercream and fresh blueberries.

I bought an Apple Crisp filled with apple cinnamon compote.  Heated it up for 5 seconds in the microwave, so the compote would get warm and bubbly – really enjoyed it with my coffee.  Just sorry it was gone in less than three bites.

Not only can Dia Doce boast being a Food Network Cupcake War winner. They’ve also recently opened a brick and mortar store in West Chester, PA (100 South High Street)!

The episode celebrated the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of America. For the first round, Dia Doce, Violet’s Cakes of Pasadena, CA, Cupcake Mojo of Weymouth, MA, and Pubcakes of San Diego, CA had two hours to create a cupcake inspired by a Girl Scout cookie. Thais cooked up a twist on the classic Thin Mint cookie: the center of her chocolate fudge cake was a layer of raspberry puree, mint creme and the cupcake was topped with chocolate ganache and cookie crumbles…READ MORE

If you’ve been following the series you know I have 5 Signature Questions to ask:

T&T: How long have you been in the food industry? When and why did you decide to start a food truck?

DD: We have been in the food industry a little over 2 years. We decided a food truck would give us the ability to follow the crowd and build a wide range of clientele.

T&T: Best elevator pitch – what sets your food truck cuisine apart from others? And what’s unique about your truck itself?

DD: Our cupcakes are farm to table. All ingredients are locally sourced and all natural. We specialize in awesome flavors like blue cheese fig and Asian pear strudel.

OUR Truck is “green”- runs on a battery and we use only recycled products.

T&T:  What do you wish the city would change about food truck vending in Philadelphia?

DD: We are based in Chester County and excited to explore the Philly market!

T&T: Who’s the most famous person to come up to your truck? And/or at what events do you do the most business?

DD: We have served cupcakes across the country. Bono loved them!

T&T: We always add a little Tinsel into our Tine, so what’s your favorite movie genre and favorite movie from that genre?

DD: Drama. True Romance. (True Romance is a 1993 dramatic, romantic crime film directed by Tony Scott and written by Quentin Tarantino).
