Philadelphia Film Critics Circle 2019 Winners

by Le Anne Lindsay, Editor

Most major cities have a Film Association which lends weight to the movies out during Awards Season. Philly didn’t have one up until 3 years ago when Critics Rich Heimlich and Stephen Silver decided it was time for Philadelphia (a movie town) to weigh in, establishing the Philadelphia Film Critics Circle (PFCC).

As of May 2019, I was inducted into their ranks, making me eligible to VOTE! And boy, was it fun receiving all those Screener DVD’s. Thankfully, I saw most films in the theater, as movies were intended, but you really feel like a big shot when those DVD’s start rolling in (although, I’d prefer screener links, as I had to buy a portable DVD player – I’m so used to just streaming). However, visually, it’s better to get something you can hold. As you can see, I tweeted about a couple of the studios deliveries:

We each submit 3 nominations for 14 Best Film Categories (next year we’ll be able to nominate more) and 2 special awards; done at least 3 days before we all meet to vote. This year hosted by The Red Owl Tavern, where we also do the Film Scribes Podcast.

Below are MY nominations.  PFCC is not releasing the official list of nominated films on which we all voted. Under my noms are the awarded films, voted on by 10 Members of the Philadelphia Film Critics Circle.

Loved the process. Did my nominations garner wins? Not too often. But the voting is fair and no one’s opinions matter more than the next person’s. Because we were 10 critics voting, that often made for ties. They’ll induct another new member in the spring, so next year’s vote should be very interesting with a tie breaking number.

I’ve been reviewing films for 10 years, and I have to say, having an opportunity to make my voice heard in this way, with my fellow film critic, and knowing studios are paying attention, makes a big difference. I do this because it interests me greatly, but it takes up countless hours – screening, researching, writing, formatting, preparing, podcasting, interviewing, promoting etc… so being a PFCC Member adds, oh, I don’t know, I suppose justification.

Updated 12.29.19: Now posted my 2019 End of the Year List of Favorite & Least Favorite Movies – Some of the above made that list, but favorite movies are less about craft and more about heart & fun.
