Philadelphia Film Critics Circle 2022 Winners

ORIGINAL POST DATE: December 18, 2022

This was my 4th year being a voting member of THE PHILADELPHIA FILM CRITICS CIRCLE (PFCC) for more on what this entails, check out posts (2019 Winners) (2020 Winners) (2021 Winners).

I did cover Sundance 2022, which is where I get a jump on seeing awards worthy films for the next coming season. And as always, I covered The Philadelphia Film Festival (31st Annual) which is crucial, as the screeners for a good number of films arrive after Thanksgiving, which this year gave us two short week to see about 10-15 additional films before submitting nominations.  I was also able to make it to almost every in theater screening, except for two: “Bones and All” & “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” because COVID finally caught up with me. Got sick at the end of PFF31. I was however, able to see these films as screeners.

My Best & Worst Films of 2022 List (click for Letterboxd, post coming soon) you’ll see there’s more similarities this year between my top 10 and what actually took top honors for PFCC. I’m not sure why that is, it could be just a happenstance of the movies that were released or the other member’s taste is starting to influence me.

I’ve been blessed to be able to run Tinsel & Tine for 12 years!  But it’s also crazy, considering the amount of time it takes up. Surely, it would have been much smarter to have been doing something lucrative during this time so that I’d now, more than likely, be able to retire early.  And it makes me wonder how long will I be doing this? Being a PFCC Member is great in many respects, but it’s also added pressure, you really have to schedule your life around seeing movies from October through the first 2 weeks of December.  Which often means turning down invitations or just not being able to get other stuff done.

There’s a movie I like with Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson called THE BIG YEAR, where they play Birders (bird watchers). People who take this hobby to the next level and seek to spot a crazy number of bird species in a given year is termed “Doing A Big Year”. These birders have to spend a lot on travel to distant places; they hike, climb, neglect family and break social engagements; not to mention, it’s rather cut throat among the birding community and just tiring in general.  But in the end, they feel elated having achieved A Big Year!

Being a film reviewer is not that consuming, but it’s damn close. And yet today, after having seen 160 movies, knowing my votes counted, and enjoying time spent with fellow PFCC members, is joyful and feels like an achievement.
