Green Screen: Philadelphia Environmental Film Festival

The Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) is now the producers of The Environmental Film Festival which will run March 31 – April 3, 2022 exclusively at the Philadelphia Film Center (1412 Chestnut Street). The Festival will highlight eleven thought-provoking feature-length films that address urgent environmental issues, from animal welfare to the effects of climate change.

“We’re excited and proud to produce this Festival, bringing important and timely films to Philadelphia,” said Philadelphia Film Society Executive Director J. Andrew Greenblatt. “We hope that this strong slate of films will both appeal to and help inform audiences on critical environmental issues around the world.”

The Festival will open with FIRE OF LOVE from Director Sara Dosa and will close with THE TERRITORY from Director Alex Pritz. Both films premiered earlier this year at Sundance. In addition, the Festival will also showcase Ron Howard’s WE FEED PEOPLE, ALICK AND ALBERT, featuring the environmental philanthropy of Prince Albert II of Monaco, and a special family friendly 30th anniversary screening of FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST.

- A young woman develops a new sense of purpose when she falls in with a group of passionate young environmental activists in this spirited coming-of-age drama.
ABOVE WATER | Director Aïssa Maïga | 5:30 PM
- Highlighting the global issue of water scarcity, this documentary follows residents of a drought-stricken Nigerien village as they fight for access to drinking water.
WE FEED PEOPLE | Director Ron Howard | 8:15 PM
- In his latest documentary, Ron Howard spotlights the work of José Andrés, the renowned chef whose nonprofit has brought relief to thousands affected by environmental and humanitarian crises.

FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST | Director Bill Kroyer | 3:00 PM
- Celebrating its 30th anniversary, this animated classic is the stirring tale of a fairy’s journey to save her rainforest home from destructive humans and an evil spirit. Family-friendly activities will begin at 2 PM, followed by the screening.

- With the threat of climate change looming, two driven 16-year-olds travel the globe to educate and confront the apathetic adults who have already determined their uncertain future.
