The 2nd annual Forbes Under 30 Summit kicked off Sunday night in Philadelphia with the Under 30 Food Festival
The food festival, held at The Kimmel Center, featured several young chefs from the esteemed Forbes 30 Under 30 list, who competed for the title of America’s best young chef.
Judged by Randall Lane (Forbes Magazine Editor) Issac Hanson and Taylor Hanson (of the band Hanson) and Under 30 Summit attendees, the following were selected as winners:
Judge’s Choice: Joseph “JJ” Johnson, The Cecil
Winning Dish: Goat Dumpling Peanut Piri Piri, Mirco Cilantro
“He took a pedestrian dish — like a dumpling — and blew our minds!” said Randall Lane, Editor of Forbes Magazine.
People’s Choice: Christopher Coombs, Boston Urban Hospitality
Winning Dish: Duck Confit Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup
“A landslide among hundreds of Forbes Under 30 attendees who voted,” said Lane. “It was an amped up take on comfort food. People devoured his duck grilled cheese sandwich.”
Tinsel & Tine Choice : Kelvan Fernandez 4 Tine Dish: Crispy Arepa (flatbread made of ground maize) with steak, lime scented sour cream, creamy guacamole, pico de gallo, Cotija cheese “Tender steak with the crunch of the arepa created a great texture. Just a delish blend of flavors all around. I ate a half dozen of them”- Le Anne Lindsay, Editor

Just received an invite for another exciting Culinary Event in Philadelphia!
10 Of America’s Most Promising Culinary Talents To Square Off In Under 30 Food Festival
Forbes.com will host an Under 30 Food Festival on Sunday, October 4th at 6 pm ET at The Piazza at Schmidt’s in Philadelphia. The food festival will feature several young chefs, winemakers, and brewers from the Forbes 30 Under 30 list competing for the title of America’s best young chef.
Chefs include: Christopher Coombs, Joseph “JJ” Johnson, Jesse Schenker, Jeff Mahin, Giorgio Rapicavoli, John Lasater, Aditi Malhotra, Kelvin Fernandez, Jason Pfeifer and Nelly Garcia.
For the second year in a row, the FORBES Under 30 Summit will feature a cook-off between the country’s most promising chefs. Last year’s winner, Recette’s Jesse Schenker, is coming back to defend his title, but he faces some stiff competition. Take, for instance, La Marina’s Kelvin Fernandez (30 Under 30 Class of 2015): he just beat Bobby Flay on ‘Beat Bobby Flay.’ Or Chef Joseph ‘JJ’ Johnson (30 Under 30 Class of 2014), who was a 2015 James Beard Award semi-finalist in the “Rising Star of the Year” category.

The Under 30 Summit will return to Philadelphia from October 4th to 7th, convening more than 2,000 of the planet’s top young entrepreneurs and game-changers, as well as world-class mentors. This year will again feature keynotes and panels, breakouts and pitch contests, as well as our signature evening activities, including the Under 30 Music Festival and the Under 30 Food Festival.
