QFEST Opening Film: G.B.F.
Last night QFEST (LGBT Film Festival in Philadelphia) opened with G.B.F. an acronym for Gay Best Friend. This movie could quite possibly be the Clueless for this generation and Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars) today’s Alicia Silverstone. G.B.F. (which premiered at TriBeCa 2013) is set in a high school where no kid has yet to come out. However, there is a gender equality organization looking for someone to defend. There’s also 3 major school cliques – one run by a perfect blonde “mean girl” bombshell, Fawcett (Sasha Pieterse); a fierce, black, drama queen, Caprice (Xosha Roquemore); and a “purity” Mormon, Shley (Andrea Bowen). All three of these girls know the…

From Hitchcock (“North by Northwest”) to Hughes (“Sixteen Candles”), Chicago gives California and New York a run for their money when it comes to movie magic. The movies filmed in Chicago reveal more than just a great setting, they show us the city’s evolution. Films allow us to see our history as it’s being written— through fashion, love, modernity, violence and society’s overall taste and development. ‘Sixteen Candles’ (1984) Molly Ringwald captivated an entire generation as John Hughes’ muse and resident “it girl” in the 1980s. “Sixteen Candles” exemplifies Hughes’ Chicago. A brash, sometimes cruel American City that…

Whole Foods Celebrates July Pies / Tinsel & Tine Celebrates Pie Movies
I make mention of cake a lot on Tinsel & Tine. In fact, if I had done my review of White House Down (which I didn’t do cause the movie was ridiculous, and Jamie Foxx & Channing Tatum have much better chemistry off camera than on) but if I had, I would have highlighted the scene where Walker (James Woods) enjoys a slice of cake right in the middle of taking 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue hostage. But I’m also very partial to pie! (See T&T review Philly Restaurant Magpie). So I was asked to let my readers know that Whole Foods Markets is celebrating Pie in July! All 9” pies are…

Mount Airy has a New Sandwich Shop – Royal’s Restaurant
As is true of every black hair salon I’ve ever encountered, an appointment time means absolutely nothing. So after waiting for 45 minutes and seeing that there was still a full weave a head of me, I decided to go in search of eats. Manager/Cook George Howell I didn’t have far to go, as next door just happened to be the Grand Opening of Royal’s Restaurant (5920 Germantown Ave Philadelphia PA 19144). A small take out spot with 3 or 4 tables. They haven’t had time to make the place homey yet, but it is bright and clean and manager George Howell is ready to meet and serve the neighborhood.…
