Acclaimed Broadway Musical ONCE Coming to Philly!

I’ve only seen the movie Once – well, once, in the theater
in 2006, two years before starting Tinsel & Tine, so I never
wrote about it, but it’s always stuck with me.  There’s a strangely
magical simplicity to this little love story between a Dublin
guitarist / singer-songwriter (Glen Hansard) who makes a living by fixing vacuum cleaners and this Czech girl (Markéta Irglová)
who plays piano when she gets a chance, and does odd jobs by day and
takes care of her mom and her daughter by night.  The soundtrack also
struck a chord with me – particularly the song “Falling Slowly”, which I
still listen to fairly often. Once is one of those little Indie films that just sneaks up on you and inexplicably charms you.

Seeing as the musical version of this film has won 8 Tony Awards, that charm must really translate from screen to stage.  I can’t wait to find out!

The Musical “Once” comes to Philly at the Academy of Music October 29 thru November 10, 2013 as part of The Kimmel Center’s Broadway Season (click for tickets).

On a side note: I got to attend the 2012 Tony Awards (click for post) and sat right behind Hansard and Irglová!

Winner of eight 2012 Tony Awards® including Best Musical, Once is a truly original Broadway experience. Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor/musicians who play their own instruments onstage, Once tells the enchanting tale of a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. As the chemistry between them grows, his music soars to powerful new heights…but their unlikely connection turns out to be deeper and more complex than your everyday romance. Emotionally captivating and theatrically breathtaking, Once draws you in from the very first note and never lets go. It’s an unforgettable story about going for your dreams…not living in fear…and the power of music to connect all of us.
