Get Strapped in “Getaway” is a FAST RIDE to Nowhere

By Christopher “Flood the Drummer”® Norris

In a film that can only be described as a three car pileup involving Ocean’s Eleven, The Italian Job and Eagle Eye, Director Courtney Solomon delivers a 90 minute, fast-paced forgettable thriller starring Ethan Hawke that will have you hanging off the edge off your seat waiting for the good part.

Retired driver Brent Magna (Hawke) straps up for the biggest race of his life when his wife, Leanne (Rebecca Budig) is kidnapped by a crazed fan (Jon Voight) and in order to get her back safely he must complete “Grand Theft Auto” type missions using the rigged Shelby Mustang Super Snake of an unnamed teen hacker (Selena Gomez) who happens to be the daughter of a billionaire banker.
“Since when does a father buy an armored sports car for his daughter?  Plus a billionaire banker with a genius daughter, who somehow figures out how to live stream their adventure, is too much of a weak plot for me. Nor is Gomez’s acting believable.

It drove me crazy, no pun intended,” says budding movie critic Rashuan “DJ Reezey” Williams, 19, who attended the movie premiere with me in Old City.
Williams happens to be a huge fan of action movies, especially ones involving fast cars, but says this one “travels to far off course for my liking.”
The “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to save my wife from being killed by the crazed kidnapper” is an overused theme that doesn’t work well for a movie that has already carjacked several other plots. (See DJ Reezey’s review of the martial arts film The Grandmaster on Tinsel & Tine).

I thought maybe Williams and I were being too hard on the film, but as it turns out, Getaway has received extremely negative reviews. It currently holds a 2% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 58 reviews, with the consensus: “Monotonously fast-paced to the point of exhaustion, Getaway offers a reminder of the dangers in attempting to speed past coherent editing, character development, sensible dialogue, and an interesting plot.”

“There was never an actual camera sequence that showed driving for over 5 seconds. It’s like, come on, I know no one was really driving that well, but at least make it look like it. Going back & forth from the film cameras to the car cameras was a cheap way of creating action. I wouldn’t buy the DVD, but I would recommend it as an alternative to Chinese water torture,” says Williams sarcastically.
