Commentary – Avatar / Oscar Catch Up

    February 11, 2010 /

As I mentioned in my Golden Globes recap, I didn’t want to see Avatar, it looked like a glorified Disney Pixar film, not that I don’t enjoy Disney Pixar, but I wouldn’t dream of spending $14 on an animated feature. Still, I try to see as many Oscar nominated films as I can before The Academy Awards. In 2005 I saw all the Best Picture nominated films without even trying (Million Dollar Baby, The Aviator, Finding Neverland, Ray, Sideways) I loved all these films. Since then, there’s always a few films nominated that my friend and I call “Spinach Movies”. These are films that are highly intelligent and well-crafted, but…

Part II Sundance Wrap Up (Scribe – Carol Coombes)

    February 6, 2010 /

Tinsel & Tine: As promised, here is the second installment of Carol’s blog from Sundance 2010 featuring Documentary reviews. Check back next week for her narrative film reviews. Documentaries, oftentimes considered the poor relative of the narrative fiction film, have in the last decade enjoyed a popular renaissance. Fueled by the runaway success of Micheal Moore’s Bowling for Columbine (2002) and followed by stand-out docs including Capturing the Friedmans (2003), Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) and March Of The Penquins (2005), film acquisition executives, distributors and educators have got the message – documentaries are riding high in the popular imagination.(photo by Carol Coombes) The technological leaps of smart-phones, the access to lightweight…

    We Interrupt Sundance…

    January 28, 2010 /

Between the Articles and Blog sections on the Sundance 2010 website, it really is the next best thing to being there. Great transcripts of the Q&A’s – The Runaways is a must see for me!But unfortunately, Carol hasn’t been able to check in the last few days. Hopefully, we’ll all stay tuned for her wrap up! The interruption comes in the form of a R.I.P. for Author, Historian and Activist, Howard Zinn, a couple of months ago, I posted commentary on the History Channel doc “The People Speak” based on Zinn’s work. I hope in honor of him they’ll broadcast the documentary again. On the flip side of that, my…
