#WkndBoxOffice Highlights January 31 – Feb 2, 2020
Super Bowl Weekend had BAD BOYS FOR LIFE at the #1 spot 3rd week in a row! To date total $148.1 M Click HERE for T&T Bad Boys #MiniMovieReview
The family film DOLITTLE took in another estimated $7.7M, in its 3rd week.
GRETEL & HANSEL debuted to an estimated $6.1M. Pretty low. Typically a horror movie does well in early January when all the movies are pretty schlocky.
THE GENTLEMEN , a movie I forgot even came out, earned an estimated $6M giving STX $20.4M
THE RHYTHM SECTION starring Blake Lively is one I would have gone to see, but I was in Sundance when the Philly press screening took place. Unfortunately, it didn’t find its audience opening to a dismal estimated $2.8M.
LAST WEEK OF DECEMBER
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Disney) which I’ve still yet to see, it may be the first movie I see in the new year, as I’ve taken a bit of a holiday break from screenings. It worldwide total stands at $725M
Jumanji: The Next Level (Sony) took second place for a second straight weekend its 3 week total 175M. A perfect sequel. so much fun!
Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (Sony) had a Christmas Debut of 16.5 M click HERE for T&T #MiniMovieReview
Frozen II (Disney) worldwide total now sits at $1.21B. I know I’m in the minority but Frozen and Frozen II don’t really affect me much. I think The Toy Story franchise is far superior. Toy Story 4 made T&T’s List of 10 Top Movies of 2019
Spies in Disguise (20th Century Fox/Disney) had a Christmas debut of 13.2M Tinsel & Tine got to interview the co-directors of this Will Smith driven vehicle featuring an animated world of spies and spy technology and pigeons! Click HERE for the #MiniMovieReview check out the interview below:
While You’re Here : Tinsel & Tine (Editor, Le Anne Lindsay) is heading to Sundance Film Festival for the first time. It’s been a dream to attend this annual film mecca since starting this site in 2010. However, I could use a bit of financial assistance with travel and wardrobe. Please consider donating to my #Sundance2020 GoFundMe

FROZEN II (Disney) Dropped from #1 for the weekend, but it did manage to shatter the $1 billion dollar mark globally in the fourth week, earning an additional estimated $19.2M– making its total to date $366.5M
KNIVES OUT (Lionsgate) is on its way into the $100M club – bringing in another estimated $9.3M. We at the Philadelphia Film Critics Circle chose Knives Out as our Best movie of the year.
RICHARD JEWELL (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood’s latest offering saw an opening of an estimated $5M from 2,502 sites. With some awards buzz and an older target audience, it could keep going through the holiday season. I have not seen it yet, I think the only awards buzz movies I didn’t get screeners for was this and Pain & Glory.
QUEEN & SLIM (Universal) (click HERE for our Review) took in another $3.6M for $33.2M overall.
A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD (Sony) Tom Hanks as beloved children’s show host Fred Rogers, collected an estimated $3.4M, bringing its total to $49.3M
I went to see it 10am Saturday morning, a mistake, as I got into a fight with a woman whose kid was laughing so loudly, not laughter at the movie, really, there’s not much to laugh about in Frozen 2. No, he/she sounded as if they were playing an outdoor game or being tickled. They were 3 or 4 rows down below me so I couldn’t really see what was going on, so I said firmly, “Please Stop That” and the Mother replied “You have a problem with it ?” and I said, “Yes, I’m trying to hear the movie” and she said, “My kid has specials needs, deal with it”. So of course, I didn’t say anything further. I think she could have said, please excuse the noise, but my child has special needs, and not coped a tude. But I can imagine it’s difficult to feel at ease taking your special needs child out to public settings. I mean, a child without disabilities can be unpredictable; so if your insecurities about your child are manifested by someone calling attention… But, instead of letting the matter go, she got up and got the manager of the theater. Who wanted me to leave my seat to have a chat. “I said, no, I’m not discussing anything now, I’m watching a movie” and he was flabbergasted. He said, “The woman below is very upset that you’re yelling at her child, who has special needs” and I said, I didn’t know. I asked once for quiet and when she replied back, I’ve said nothing since, and I’m trying to watch this movie!” Seeing as I wasn’t budging he left.
Moral of the story, I was given a chance to see Frozen II during a press screening, but it was held in the middle of the week, in the middle of the afternoon. I didn’t go because I didn’t want to take time off work, but next animated movie – totally worth it to take the day off or pay the additional to go to the latest screening possible. Kidding, that’s not really the moral of the story, but you get my point 😕
I missed the press screening for this one, but was fortunate enough to be sent the screener, so me and my family watched it after dinner on Thanksgiving. It was a great movie for mixed ages. It’s not as inspiring as the Mr. Rogers documentary, but Tom Hanks really does embody the saintly, children’s television host and the framing of the story from the point of view of the journalist interviewing Rogers is a much more digestible undertaking. If they had tried to do a biopic, I could see that falling short.
