Tribeca Short List – Streaming Movies Partnering with LionsGate

Have you heard about this exciting new development between Tribeca Enterprises and LionsGate?

In 2015 we’ll be able to stream a selection of both Lionsgate and Tribeca Film titles as well as critically-acclaimed films from around the world when TRIBECA SHORT LIST is launched, a subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service. Tribeca Short List films will be curated by Tribeca and refreshed on a weekly basis.

“We are pleased to join with Lionsgate, a world-class brand synonymous with innovation and exciting, quality entertainment, to create a highly curated experience that disrupts the ‘more-is-more’ model in today’s streaming on-demand landscape,” said Jane Rosenthal, CEO of Tribeca Enterprises. “Tribeca Short List aims to be a service where you can see films you never got to watch, forgot to watch, and want to watch.”

So far no word on pricing and number of titles, will keep you posted as I receive press releases on the partnership.

“The launch of the Tribeca Short List service unites two powerful brands and underscores our commitment to collaborate with blue-chip partners around the world to deliver premium content to online audiences,” said Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer. “The Tribeca name resonates with movie aficionados everywhere, and our service will encompass a highly curated, diverse and prestigious portfolio of quality films.”

The move comes amid great tumult in entertainment. Netflix surprised Hollywood with a recent announcement that it would cut out movie theaters by making and exclusively showing feature-length films, including four by Adam Sandler and the next “Crouching Tiger” movie.

I’ll always prefer going to the movies and film festivals, but Tribeca Short List will most likely get the Indie flicks I miss in the theaters, before Netflix makes them available and those films that Netflix never adds to their inventory.

Tribeca and Lionsgate are at first glance an unlikely pair. Lionsgate is increasingly home to worldwide blockbusters like “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent.” Tribeca focuses entirely on arty, independent filmmaking; movies released through its Tribeca Films unit have included “Detachment,” a drama starring Adrien Brody, and “Palo Alto,” the directing debut of Gia Coppola.

But Lionsgate’s turn toward more overtly commercial movies has been a relatively recent one. Its library also includes “Monster’s Ball,” “Crash” and “Precious” — films that could benefit from availability on the new service. Lionsgate also owns a stake in Roadside Attractions, an indie film operation known for releases like “Mud” and “Margin Call.”
