Philly Restaurant – White Dog Cafe (XPN Music Film Fest)

    May 6, 2012 /

I was pretty good both calorie and pocketbook wise, and brought snacks to eat during most of last weekend’s XPN/PFS Music Film Festival, but I did dine out twice – Saturday night with a friend at The White Dog Cafe. This used to be my very favorite restaurant, I still love the vibe, but now I’ve had a few mediocre meals there in the last few months.  FINGERLING POTATO SKINS $7 (Sorry no pic, we ate them before I remembered to snap one)  Green Meadow Farms Smoked Bacon, Lancaster Aged Smoked Cheddar, Lime Sour Cream – Not nearly as tasty as they sound – 2 Tines BUFFALO VEGAN CHEESESTEAK $11…

    Philly Dining – LAS BUGAMBILIAS

    April 1, 2012 /

We were heading to South Street Diner when I noticed Las Bugambilias (148 South Street) not sure why it never caught my eye before as I normally pay attention to all the dining spots in and around Headhouse Square. I plan on coming back to this romantic little brick-walled Mexican Cantina (hopefully with a date) as soon as possible.  Unfortunately, my friend Di and I were really only looking for a quick bite, as earlier we consumed a big brunch (see Hawthornes post) and were tired after shopping and a movie (See The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye post), so she ordered a salad and I had soup. The…

Commentary – Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

    December 17, 2011 /

by Le Anne Lindsay, Editor I remember nothing of the plot of the first Sherlock Holmes movie, but it didn’t seem to impede my enjoyment of the 2nd installment of this sleuthing franchise, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring my love, Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows also features one of my favorites from the series Mad Men (Jared Harris/ Lane Pryce) in the role of Holme’s nemesis, Dr. Moriarty; along with the official Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Noomi Rapace. The same elements used in the first film, work to make this fast-paced, studio vehicle equally or perhaps more fun: Downey carrying the…

Support AFFRM – Kinyarwanda at select theaters this weekend

    December 2, 2011 /

AFFRM is the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement – empowering black independent filmmakers with collaborative, simultaneous theatrical distribution in multiple markets. Last March AFFRM got behind Ava DuVernay’s  I Will Follow (click for T & T commentary). Giving it a chance to reach a wider audience.  This weekend AFFRM is launching Alrick Brown’s KINYARWANDA. Which I will screen on Sunday. The below video from Reelblack features Brown talking about the film, AFFRM and the state of African American Cinema in general. For all its greatness, “Hotel Rwanda” nevertheless used the conventional Hollywood technique of a movie star as a protagonist to serve as the audience’s entry point. None of the…

At Home with Trader Joe’s: Chicken Quesadillas & Lobster Ravioli

    November 15, 2011 /

Gotta start by saying this is NOT a paid sponsorship or affiliation.  I wouldn’t be adverse to that opportunity, but this post just comes from the fact that when I’m home, I don’t cook. I make easy does it, just add water or oil and stir kinda meals, while still looking for comfort foods, big tastes and lots of flavor. All of which I find in Trader Joe’s Southwest Chicken Quesadillas (4 Tines) – they come 2 in a box costing $3.29, so that’s less than $1.70 each.  A price you can’t get at any restaurant, but they are restaurant quality! All the ingredients are real, as if you cut…
