Spies in Disguise Directors Interview – Troy Quane & Nick Bruno

by Le Anne Lindsay, Editor

The movie features the voices of Will Smith as a dashing, daring Lance Sterling, an International Spy (Black James Bond). He’s smooth, dressed impeccably and works alone.  He may be part of the agency, but he needs no back up on his missions and his motto is fight fire with fire. Tom Holland (Spider-man) plays Walter Beckett, a socially inept scientific genius and weapons/gadgets expert (a young Q). Only his motto is that the agency should hold themselves to higher standards and never shoot or kill the enemy, just disarm them.  So he’s designed an arsenal of goofy, sweet, yet effective spy technology. Including the ability to turn an agent into a pigeon as the perfect surveillance cover. (Movie is loosely based on Lucas Martell’s 2009 animated short Pigeon: Impossible).

A case of mistaken identity forces Lance on the run. Ending up at Walter’s where he accidentally becomes the first Pigeon Spy. Now these two guys with such opposing outlooks and personalities must become a team to defeat the villain Killian (Ben Mendelsohn).  Part Buddy Comedy / Part Spy Thriller, between the color pallid and Smith’s ad-libs,  I found myself entertained throughout.  Children under 10 may not be as engaged, but they’ve worked in a flock of comical pigeon side kicks to give younger move-goers some fun visuals.

I really enjoyed meeting the two directors of SPIES IN DISGUISE Troy Quane & Nick Bruno both very engaging and genuinely in love with their movie. They not only made a good directorial team, but they were also perfectly in sync when answering questions.

I got to ask them about how they came to the project, how they got famed producer Mark Ronson on board, we talked about the job of directing an animated feature and the subtle details that flesh out character and story arcs, they even revealed the reason Spies release date was pushed back for so many months and more… Here’s the interview:

FIRST INTERVIEW USING MY NEW CAMCORDER

I definitely need to do more promotion of Tinsel & Tine’s Youtube Channel. Need to figure out how to create those flashing SUBSCRIBE notifications. I’ve had the channel for years, back in the day, before YouTube changed it’s rules, I even used to make about $5 a year – LOL!  The main content consists of post screening Q&A’s, red carpet interviews , Philly event coverage and a number of interviews with directors and actors I did during roundtable press junkets, where I recorded the audio and turned it into videos via still photos. Which beats transcribing interviews in Q&A format; this way at least viewers can hear the inflection of the voices and the spirit of the interview, yet it’s just not as effective as actual video, so this year, on Black Friday, I bought my first camcorder!

Isn’t it cute? – I’ve bought it mainly for Sundance Film Festival 2020 coming up at the end of January, but being asked to interview these guys was the perfect opportunity to put it on a tripod and take it for a test drive!
