PUBLIC TELEVISION 102 WORKSHOP
September 9, 2021
Time: 7pm
Earlier this spring SIFTMedia and IPMF invited filmmakers to come get to know our friendly regional Public Television Programmers! We wanted to give Filmmakers the opportunity to learn the in’s and out’s of getting their work on regional & national PBS.
It was a lively and informative event with great feedback. So much so, Sreedevi Sripathy, Director of Programming and Production at WHYY TV12 wants to have a follow up workshop for those that were in attendance at Public Television 101: A Filmmaker’s Guide to Navigating Public Television from the Tri-State Area. She’s looking to form new relationships with local filmmakers and have an opportunity to provide an overview of WHYY’s current slate of independent short films.
This will give attendees a better chance to ask questions like –
How do I submit ?
What length of work will WHYY TV12 accept?
If my program is accepted, when can I expect it to air?
Do stations pay for content?
Do I have to provide Closed Captioning before I submit?
What are the technical specs required? etc…
Moderator: Nadine Patterson, Independent Producer HipCinema and Co-Founder SIFTMedia 215 Collective.

PERMISSION GRANTED WORKSHOP
Grants are a great way to jumpstart a film project and garner support for your work. Learn how to navigate the process and get the money!
About this Event
Never leave free money on the table. Grants are an excellent way to jumpstart a film project and garner support for your work. But many independent filmmakers are reluctant about the process. Have you applied for grant? Do you hate asking people for money? If you answered YES or NO, to the previous questions, this workshop is for you!
How do you describe an unusual project to a potential funder? How do you decide how much to ask for? How do you determine which fund to apply to, or who to ask for support? In this SIFTMedia 215 Live Grantwriting Workshop, we will explore these issues.
If you are interested in taking the workshop, please send your name, a brief project description, and general budget overview to siftmedia215@gmail.com, with SIFTMedia 215 Live Grantwriting Workshop in the subject header.
Workshop led by SIFTMedia 215 Co-Founder Nadine Patterson, who has been making independent films through Harmony Image Productions since 1995. A husband and wife dance couple separate when she pursues a career overseas. He stays behind to raise their daughter with his mother.
BLACK BALLERINA (2016, 57 min) dir. by Fran McElroy
Black Ballerina tells the story of several black women from different generations who fell in love with ballet. Six decades ago, while pursuing their dreams, Joan Myers Brown, Delores Browne, and Raven Wilkinson confronted racism, exclusion, and unequal opportunity. Today, young dancers of color continue to face formidable challenges breaking into the overwhelmingly white world of ballet. Moving back and forth in time, this lyrical, character-driven film shows how far we still have to go and stimulates a fresh discussion about race, inclusion, and opportunity across all sectors of American society.

SIFTMedia215 Live! project has been supported by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, the Federal-State Partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities and by Independence Public Media Foundation.
Date: Tuesday February 25th
Time: 12 -1pm
Location: Mt. Airy Nexus 520 Carpenter Lane, Philadelphia PA 19119
What is the role or function of art in our society? For hundreds of years, different art forms have been tied to political and social movements. In recent times, we have seen that art has separated from its function, as it becomes more commodified and tied to consumerism and the selling of products or services.
In an ongoing series that takes a look at the role of the arts in Resistance, Organizing and Cultural Transformation, HipCinema Labs and SIFT Media 215 bring cultural programming to North West Philadelphia.
Through film screenings and open dialog, the series will take a look at this shift and also take a look at the healing function of art: to bridge the spiritual and emotional realms and create a sense of joy and shared humanity among those creating/witnessing together. It is through this healing power that art can magnify, actualize, and bolster social progress.
Light Refreshments will be served
The first program will feature filmmaker Nadine Patterson and her half-hour documentary “Moving with the Dreaming” which explores the cross-cultural collaboration between African Americans and Aboriginal and Islander Australians in modern dance and civil rights. It was broadcast on public television in Philadelphia, PA and Tucson, Arizona; Winner of a Prized Pieces award of the National Black Programming Consortium 1997. Music by Warren Oree and the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble. Produced by Marlene G. Patterson… READ MORE
