ROCKETMAN
Tinsel & Tine’s #MiniMovieReview ROCKETMAN (Dir Dexter Fletcher) is a creative mix of biopic / musical theater / music video, which I felt suited the subject. The blending of fantasy and reality also allows for some creative license. Because as much as I enjoyed Straight Outta Compton and Bohemian Rhapsody, they’re written as if everything is 100% accurate, which of course is impossible with a screenplay, that’s why there are documentaries, which typically are still only about 85 – 90% accurate.
That being said, I read this Slate.com article – which takes some of the movie’s scenes and compares them to actual accounts in Elton John’s life and according to this piece, most of the basic facts are true, aside from a few embellishments and time line tweaks…
But warning! A lot of spoilers, so maybe don’t read until after you see Rocketman
In terms of Taron Egerton as Elton John, I worried he’d be too hetero and contemporary. I figured he and Elton bonded during Kingsman II and that’s the only reason he got the part. That may be true but Taron also found his inner showman and was a convincing young Elton. Also, enjoyed the bonding scenes between he and Jamie Bell who plays lyricist Bernie Taupin. I’m always taken in by strong friendship in a movie.
But mainly Rocketman is about the songs we all know by heart. The movie covers the most prolific period in their lives. Despite all the drugs, sex, self-hatred and fear Elton John was suffering through in his young life, he was also WORKIN!
