Director Cristian Mungiu (Four Months, Three Weeks and Two Days) earned his second Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with this masterfully constructed tour de force loosely inspired by a real case. Stellar performances and razor-sharp editing keep you gripped until the very end. Raw, emotional, and incredibly complex, Mungiu’s latest film tells a story that asks us to set aside our biases and find the line between cultural differences and unforgivable acts before we drift farther apart forever.

He hopes his heroic gesture will not only earn points with his distant daughter, but also allow him to come to terms with his own bullied past. Even better, he is joined by paragons of masculinity in lothario playboy Pontus (Linus Wahlgren) and charismatic father-of-the-year Bobo (Fares Fares). Together, the three are confident in their united front to thwart all bullies on the trip. Yet it isn’t long before cracks in their alliance emerge. Burdened by paranoia and a troubled past, Bill is an easy target for Bobo and Pontus’ increasingly aggressive teasing. As the texts from the concerned parents mount and the unruly teenagers threaten to take over the trip, Bill must decide what kind of man he wants to be. Writer/director Alex Schulman crafts a cringe-filled riot that is unafraid to send its characters into an unhinged amoral abyss. Despite the darker comedic elements played for laughs, Schulman, accompanied by the excellent central trio of performances, provides a surprisingly nuanced psych evaluation that proposes that maybe today’s kids (and adults) aren’t all right.
