Nora Gibson Contemporary Ballet Presents: 2016 Philadelphia Screendance Festival

Don’t Miss This “Dance-For-Camera” Film Festival

February 16-21, 2016

A Philly based dancer and fellow blogger (Click Go Review) Emma MacDonald, let me know about this upcoming film and dance fusion, 6 day festival happening this month. I’m planning to cover a couple days for T&T, be sure to start following Tinsel & Tine on Periscope @tinseltine and Instagram @tinsel_tine for Live Coverage!

Post Update 2/17/16:  I attended last night and we did hold an impromptu Q&A after the screenings,  but I forgot to Periscope it!  Here’s a picture of two of the filmmakers in attendance with Nora center lft: Zornitsa Stoyanova “Chrysalis” (Philadelphia, PA) rt. Ashley Marinelli “Rorschach” (Brooklyn, NY)

Nora said she was surprised by the big response from filmmakers around the United States and even one submission from Iran.  She choose about 60% of the films to include in the festival.  The criteria allowed for any type of dance, excluding documentary style footage, or video of dance performances.  She was also looking for films that captured dance from an interesting perspective camera-wise.

Here’s the Background on Screendance

Nora Gibson Contemporary Ballet presents Philadelphia’s newest international
“danceforcamera”
film festival, which celebrates the nexus between the cinematic and the
choreographic! 27 “danceforcamera”
short films from film/dancemakers
from all over the
globe, Philadelphia, Montreal, Santa Barbara, Greece, Iran, San Francisco, NYC, London, and
more will be represented in three separate programs in this exciting, 6 day
event.

All three programs provide a variety of films, featuring award winning film makers, seasoned
choreographers, and emerging artists.

Philadelphia artists’ work can be seen in all three of the
programs: Jillian Harris , Joseph Carlin , Zornitsa Stoyanova , Niki Cousineau , and Jorge
Cousineau
.

There is a stunning array of choreography to be enjoyed, including work from Amy
Seiwert
, Crystal Pite , Jody Oberfelder , and many more.

NGCB created this festival with a desire to take Gibson’s passion
for dynamic collaboration to a
new level.
The “danceforcamera”genre is the epitome of crossdisciplinary
creation:
choreography, cinematography, music, dance, editing . . . .
It was a logical step in the
company’s programming to host an event
that celebrates this fusion of artistry.

The Philadelphia Screendance
Festival is a world class event that Philadelphia can be proud to call its own.

There are three separate programs, all of short films of varied types: narrative, abstract, poetic,
horrific, fun, sumptuous, heartwarming, strange, and beautiful.

PROGRAM C: Thursday & Sunday (Thurs 8:30-9:30/ Sun 4:30-5:

NGCB’s MISSION:
Nora Gibson Contemporary Ballet is committed to presenting ballet that is both beautiful and
intellectually bold. Central to the company’s mission is the pursuit of this question: “What is
ballet in the 21st Century?” As an American, female choreographer, Gibson is a voice of
progress as to the scope of ballet. Gibson’s work is inspired by the beauty of the natural world,
as evidenced in mathematics and science. NGCB provides a platform for interdisciplinary
collaboration between dance, music, light installation, and academia.
