THE PERFECT MATCH

I gave away tickets for The Perfect Match; posted it as T&T’s banner header for a couple of weeks; promoted a Ladies Night preview screening (see pic below) so I was hoping it would be a cute rom/com in the way of Jumping the Broom. Unfortunately, for me, it’s missing some beats.

Terrence J (Jenkins) from “E news” & “Think Like a Man”, plays Charlie Mack, a ladies man who accepts a bet with his “boyz” to date the same woman until one of the guy’s wedding. That woman is model Eva, played by new comer and R&B singer Cassie Ventura. Eva only wants a hook up type of relationship so she’s not deceived, she knows about the bet from the beginning, which I do like. And there’s a couple of truly funny lines in the movie, but on the whole it needed another pass at the script.

Terrrence J & Donald Faison would be good in a buddy comedy

But mainly, I can’t buy Terrence J as this smooth, suave branding expert and magnet for women. Donald Faison (best known for Scrubs and Clueless) plays one of the friends in the bet. He and his wife, played by Dascha Polanco from Orange is the New Black & Joy, have a wanna get pregnant side storyline in the movie.

I think I’d like to see Donald Faison and Terrence J in a buddy comedy, as lovable losers who somehow win in the end. It may be a bit cliched and I’m sure Terrence J would prefer to play a guy on top of the world, even if a bit closed off to love, than a goof. And obviously this guy is not a goof – making big moves producing and working things in his favor in Hollywood, but for me he’s not a leading man.

Paula Patton also misses the mark as Charlie’s psychologist sister, it’s like she can’t find her grove, she’s too enthusiastic and fake.

Bottom line: The Perfect Match is still a good date night movie. I’m always happy to see a black cast in a movie not about a black subject. It’s got a lot of style – the sets, wardrobe, all really high end – it’s a glossy world of photo shoots, fabulous cribs and rapper French Montana has an extended cameo.  By the way, does he have a pet monkey in real life?
