Mount Airy has a New Sandwich Shop – Royal’s Restaurant

As is true of every black hair salon I’ve ever encountered, an appointment time means absolutely nothing.  So after waiting for 45 minutes and seeing that there was still a full weave a head of me, I decided to go in search of eats.

Manager/Cook George Howell

I didn’t have far to go, as next door just happened to be the Grand Opening of Royal’s Restaurant (5920 Germantown Ave Philadelphia PA 19144).  A small take out spot with 3 or 4 tables. They haven’t had time to make the place homey yet, but it is bright and clean and manager George Howell is ready to meet and serve the neighborhood.

Royal’s official opening with grilled food and sandwich menu won’t be until Friday, but as an introduction they were offering large turkey hoagies with the works, a can of soda & chips for $3!

Hours will be every day 9am – 4pm. They’ll keep it simple at first: breakfast, fish sandwiches, cheesesteaks, burgers, fries, breaded chicken wings. But eventually plan on adding Soul Food Dinners.

I asked George about his food service experience.  He said he worked for a similar spot in West Philly owned by a Chinese family for over a decade and decided if he can make money for them, he can make money for himself.  Royal’s is actually owned by a friend of his who bought it on auction, as an investment, but has given the place over to George to run.

I wish them every success! The hoagie and George’s personality receive 4 Tines. I’m really looking forward to trying the fish sandwich during my next salon “appointment”. Or as it’s only a 10 minute walk, perhaps next week.

* Excellent – 4 Tines
* Great – 3 Tines
* Good – 2 Tines
* Fair – 1 Tine
* Poor – Tarnished
