Flood the Drummer’s Beat Focuses On: ESCAPE PLAN

Stallone and Schwarzenegger Breakout Big
in Escape Plan

By Blog Contributor Christopher “Flood the Drummer” Norris

The former Governor of California (Arnold Schwarzenegger) returns to the big screen in one of his most memorable films to date – yes, better than Kindergarten Cop and Jingle All the WayEscape Plan deals directly with the issue of mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex, where two of Hollywood’s biggest action heroes are forced to ban together to take down their biggest enemy ever, the U.S. Government.

Owner of a high-profile security firm that specializes in testing the reliability of maximum security prisons, Ray Breslin (Sylvester Stallone), a former prosecutor, willingly spends the majority of his life inside prison walls, studying the behavior and movements of prison guards, looking for flaws in the structures, and then escaping. Believing there’s no prison he can’t break out of, Breslin accept a multi-million dollar contract from a CIA Agent (Amy Ryan) to go undercover in a top-secret prison to see if it’s escape proof. Once inside, the Houdini of holding cells, he realizes he’s been double-crossed and must devise the most elaborate escape plan of his entire career.

Ray’s genius is no match for his ego, as taking this deal in the first place is nothing short of insane and impossible. I won’t give away too much about the reasons for the conspiracy to keep Ray imprisoned forever.  Or how he and fellow inmate Rottmayer (Schwarzenegger), team up, but I will say these two embark on a very interesting, dramatic, and comedic journey that will have you on the edge of your seat until the credits roll. Although labeled an action thriller, the complimentary and hilarious relationship of Schwarzenegger and Stallone’s characters develop into more of an action/comedy.

“It seems to me that age and experience has somewhat forced these two to focus more on delivering believable characters who have depth and context, instead of just being the “muscle” that shoots guns, blow things up, and spout great quotes,” says my movie partner in crime, Rashuan “DJ Reezey Williams.

Directed by Mikael Hafstrom, Escape Plan (116 minutes) also stars Jim Caviezel as Hobbes (Warden) and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Hush.
