During the post screening Q&A, winning Filmmaker Wanjiru Njendu talked about her upbringing in Kenya, her obsession with Steven Spielberg films, her family’s support, calling her “Magic” as a child because everyone could see she’d grow up to be a success.
How Karyn Parsons (Producer) (Hilary – Fresh Prince of Bel Air) inspired her to make this film.
Her invitation to join the new class of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (#Oscars) voting members.
She talked a lot about the behind the scenes making of Boxed, her team, particularly her Cinematographer & Co-Producer Bongani Mlambo and of course the star, Adetokumboh M’Cormack, who believe it or not, suffers from claustrophobia.
She’s been given a Studio greenlight for her first feature film a Comedy/Horror.
BOXED has played at an impressive 72 Film Festivals and will be available on Amazon Prime in October 2020.

Original post 9/27/19 - 2019 Winner:
The 2019 Honoree: Robert Greenwald, founder of Brave New Films a nonprofit film and advocacy organization which works to foster social change and human rights policies. The films are distributed for free in concert with nonprofit partners and movements in order to educate and mobilize for progressive causes. The work of Brave New Films has been screened around the world and viewed over tens of millions of times and counting.
Brave New Films most recent documentary was the focus of the American Insight Free Speech Film Festival. A very relevant topic as we head into the 2020 Election.
This 38 minute groundbreaking work, SUPPRESSED: The Fight to Vote, (watch full-length below) examines the systematic disenfranchisement of voters in the 2018 mid-term election in Georgia. That’s when now-Gov. Brian Kemp narrowly defeated Stacey Abrams amid widespread complaints of voter suppression tactics that disproportionately affect communities of color.

The film makes compelling and plain truths – Republican state officials are intentionally suppressing the votes of minorities and Democrats with closure of hundreds of polling sites which disproportionately affected minority voting precincts. The film shows several instances of long lines at polling places and three- to four-hour wait times.
Chantel Mullin, who was also interviewed for the film, said she wanted to share what she experienced answering phones at a voter hotline.
“It’s one thing to hear about it, but it’s another thing to actually talk to real people who are experiencing the problem,” Mullin said.
There was the story of an active-duty military member whose absentee ballot was sent to the wrong place and voters who were purged from the rolls because of a lack of participation in previous elections.
Director Robert Greenwald hopes the film spurs on those who share his concern about voting rights. One way to act – Host a Screening in Your Community!
