The expanded CENTERPIECE slate ALL OF A SUDDEN directed by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi; ELSINORE, directed by Simon Stone; FJORD directed by Cristian Mungiu; JOSEPHINE directed by Beth de Araújo; LA BOLA NEGRAdirected by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi; and WILD HORSE NINE directed by Martin McDonagh.
For the first time ever, the festival will present Fresh Air Live, partnering with the popular NPR show for an onstage conversation between host Terry Gross and writer/director/actor Jesse Eisenberg in-person on Sunday, October 25. The event will take place at the Philadelphia Film Society Center. One of America’s most respected interview shows, Fresh Air with Terry Gross and Tonya Mosley, produced in Philadelphia by WHYY, reaches listeners in more than 200 countries and territories, reaching more than 6 million listeners in over 200 countries and territories every week.
Newly announced premieres include the NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERES of Julien Gaspar-Oliveri’s THE BLOW and Warwick Thornton’s WOLFRAM, and the U.S. premiere of Michaël R. Roskam’sLE FAUX SOIR. East Coast premieres include Félix de Givry’s GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD, Jay Silverman’s YALE, Neto Villalobos Brenes’ LOVE IS THE MONSTER and Ken Kwapis’ WE ARE THE SHAGGS.
THE FILMADELPHIA section includes the previously announced world premieres of Hoag Kepner’s BIG PHAN, Doree Simon Hatfield’s GENTLE BY BIRTH, Andrew Sullivan’sI DON’T WANT TO DRINK YOUR BLOOD ANYMORE and Max Korman’s JOY WILL PREVAIL. New additions to the section are THE HAUNTING OF PENNHURST, directed by Nathan Stenberg, Mike Attie and Katarina Poljak. The Filmadelphia Shorts Program also includes the world premiere of Justin Crowell’s PHILLY PRETZELS and the North American premiere of Vadim Egoul’s CASUALTY.
THE STATE OF THE UNION section includes the aforementioned 14TH, Patrick X. Bresnan’s FIRST THEY CAME FOR MY COLLEGE and Gabriela Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman’s NUISANCE BEAR.
THE ANIMATED LIFE includes the aforementioned RAY GUNN alongside IN WAVES, IRON BOY, TANGLES, VERTIGINOUS, VIVA CARMEN and WE ARE ALIENS.
DOCUMENTARY selections in Non/Fiction include Nanette Burstein’s CARL SAGAN: WE ARE MADE OF STAR STUFF, Eleanor Coppola’s MAKING MARIE ANTOINETTE and Luke Lorentzen’s BOATBUILDERS.
The Philadelphia Film Society will also debut its new 70mm projection system during the 35th Philadelphia Film Festival, presenting two selections in the format: 2001: A Space Odysseyand Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The special presentations will offer audiences the opportunity to experience these landmark films in 70mm, made possible through the support of the Wyncote Foundation at the recommendation of Leonard C. Haas.
THE MASTERS OF CINEMA program includes films from Pedro Almodóvar, Radu Jude, Paweł Pawlikowski, Danny Boyle, Andrew Haigh, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Andrey Zvyagintsev, Julia Loktev, David Greaves and William Greaves, Lee Chang-dong and Mike Leigh.
