Around the Web w/ CAPTAIN AMERICA: The Winter Soldier

 

You know me and war movies, even comic book depicted war I try to avoid as much as possible, so I wasn’t interested in seeing Captain America The First Avenger when it came out in 2011. And the first Thor movie, well, I just kinda let it pass for no real good reason (I’m caught up now).  Originally, I was mostly only into Iron Man, mainly due to my love for Robert Downey, Jr.,. Then later, The Avengers movie looked like a hoot, so I definitely wanted and did see that in the theater; which clued me in on how intertwined the whole Marvel Universe is throughout each movie, no matter the main character.  It’s really like if you’re in for a penny, you’ve got to be in for a pound. So, I thought I’d better go see Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  But this is no holding place movie until the next Avengers.  This movie was GREAT!

It’s got a solid script, they found a smart balance between alluding to Steven Rogers a.k.a Captain America’s history and allowing the audience to totally jump aboard this movie without having seen the first one. I didn’t pay a lot of attention to Chris Evans (Captain America) in The Avengers, but I have to say, he’s VERY appealing, Chris Hemsworth is so distracting and I’ve had long-term crushes on both Mark Ruffalo and RDJ, so poor Chris Evans escaped my notice, until now.

The movie also has prominent and Marvel Universe impacting roles for Samuel L. Jackson as Fury, Nicholas J. , Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce and the introduction of The Falcon played by Anthony Mackie who’s been racking up roles, I’ve recently seen him in (Repentance, Runner Runner, The Fifth Estate & Pain & Gain).

Following the Chitauri invasion of New York, S.H.I.E.L.D. decides it’s best to squash threats before they become threats. They decide to do this by building three next-generation helicarriers that are linked together by a super advanced A.I. (be sure to pay attention to this) that is able to single out and target specific people that it deems to be a danger. Of course this sort of “freedom” goes completely against what Cap stands for, and it’s becomes pretty apparent that S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t the same organization that he thought it was…
…With the political thriller theme comes more realistic types of action. There aren’t aliens with laser blasts or Asgardians calling in the thunder here, it’s bullets and explosions mixed with awesome hand-to-hand combat. makes his customary guest appearance and who cheer and clap when
Captain America dons his original suit.  They also wear the gear!

COMIC VINE: What were the biggest obstacles?

J Russo: The only way you can make a movie like this is based on what you want to see, right? Because if you’re listening to everyone else, you’re going to make a shitty movie. If you try to anticipate how the audience is going to react, you’re going to make a shitty movie. All we could rely upon was our own taste and what we wanted to see in a Captain America film. That’s what we put to the movie and you hope everyone else responds to it.

We didn’t feel like there were a lot of challenges, from a pressure standpoint or from a scrutiny standpoint. We just didn’t pay attention to that. Physical challenges? Yes.
