ESCAPE TO THE COVE – 5 Questions for Indie Filmmaker Robert Enriquez

by LeAnne Lindsay, Editor

For some reason, I haven’t yet gotten around to watching “The Walking Dead”, but otherwise, I do tend to gravitate to Zombie movies; my recent favorites being Woody Harrelson & Jessie Eisenberg in “Zombieland” 1 & 2 and Nicholas Hoult in “Warm Bodies”. So when I was sent the trailer for ESCAPE TO THE COVE by writer/director/actor Robert Enriquez, I was intrigued.

Synopsis: In the near future, a pandemic has ravaged the earth. Fear, greed and destruction have made way for such terrors as famine, pirates, and zombies. Cairo Yazid’s (Garrett Barghash), only chance for survival is to join forces with a curmudgeon, Solomon (Robert Enriquez), also still untouched by the fatal virus, as he is the only one who knows the secret location of the safe place known simply as THE COVE.

“Escape to the Cove” is not your comedic Zombie movie, it’s actually a survival type film, more in the vein of a low budget “The Bird Box” meets “Water World”. And I do believe it is the first introduction to water Zombies! People who ate fish infected with the virus and now live an aquatic existence, praying on anyone who steps foot into the water or even a row boat.  Based on the premise, it’s easy to understand how Robert came up with the idea for Escape to the Cove during COVID-19 lockdown early in 2020. And was able to shoot many of the scenes which require a desolate Los Angeles, in LA when the streets were actually empty.
