Season 2, Episode 1: The Devils Are Here

 Directed by Lee Daniels, picks up 3 months later and Lucious Lyon is still behind bars, yet still calling the shots.  Jamal has become his loyal cub. And has not only bulked up his body, but he’s got a swelled head, giving everyone, even Becky, attitude as the new head of Empire.

A “Free Lucious Lyon” concert is being put on in the opening scene, complete with Cookie in a cage wearing a Gorilla suit.  They don’t so much wanna get Lucious out, but it’s good publicity, giving it a #BlackLivesMatter type social rally edge. Mainly Cookie and Hakeem use it to impress their investor – hot lesbian Mimi (Marisa Tomei) who they need for the hostile take over.

Meanwhile other than a flashback of seeing his wife digging Vernon’s grave, Andre’s holding his bipolar together for the time being, and excited about being a father.

We finally get to see this gangsta Frank Gathers (Chris Rock) who Cookie, Carol & Lucious used to sell drugs for back in the day, who Cookie secretly testified against, and had a hit put out against one of his top enforcers last season.

So despite pimping out Anika aka Boo Boo Kitty, to Mimi, the hostile take over is squashed as Mimi goes to Lucious in prison and makes another deal behind Cookie, Anika and Hakeem’s back.

But no matter what internal backstabbing is going on in the Lyon’s family, when an outside force tries to take anyone down, they band together. Frank finds out that Cookie was the one who turned States evidence against him and sends her a “heady” warning that he’s coming for her. Cookie hasn’t forgiven Luscious for everything that went down last season, not to mention just hours before, thwarting her take over. Still, she goes to Lucious for help with Frank. Likewise, Lucious hasn’t forgiven Cookie for everything she did last season, not
to mention trying to plan a hostile take over and not visiting him in
jail until she needs his help. On top of that, Lucious is cool with Frank, and Frank’s got no beef with Lucious… But that doesn’t stop Lucious from taking Frank out – completely out to protect Cookie – the woman he loves.
