Empire Season 2 RECAP: Fires of Heaven

Empire Season 2, Episode 3: Fires of Heaven

Directed by Craig Brewer writer/director of “Hustle and Flow” starts out with Lucious out on bail and rubbing it in the face of the District Attorney Roxanne Ford (Tyra Ferrell). In fact, her persistence in trying to convict him of murder has gotten Lucious interested in her sexually.

Cookie has her hands full trying to manage Hakeem manage his all Latino girl group Menage a Trois. Particularly since he’s sleeping with the lead, Valentina (Becky G).

Jamal can’t find another producer who can handle and support him like Cookie

Lucious feeling magnanimous on his first night home from the big house invites the whole family to his house for dinner and tells them if they drop Lyon Dynasty all is forgiven, even Cookie’s pillow smothering incident from last season.  Cookie emphatically tells Lucious where he can put his offer, and “dragmatically” leaves, pulling the food to the floor.  Now that takes the cake!

Lucious has big plans for Frank Gatz ghetto daughter Freda (Bre-z) and demands Jamal sign her at any cost, telling him she’s everything to him musically. Which again makes Jamal feel like Cookie appreciated his talents in a way that Lucious can’t or won’t.  Although, at the end of the episode, Lucious promises Jamal he’s gonna personally produce him, and stops him from going to Cookie.

Musical guests included Pitbull in a hot collaboration with Jamal. And finally the show’s music producer, Timbaland makes an appearance as himself, performing with Hakeem when Lyon Dynasty crashes Empire’s party.

Lucious of course gets them back – not only does he buy up a “Lion’s share” of the media company that controls radio airplay, but steals Valentina out of Menage a Trois. What I wanna know is, how come contracts mean nothing in this show? Every week it’s about sign this artist sign that artist, but no sooner are they signed, another label can steal them away as if they’re free agents.

Anika doesn’t know which side she’s playing for and really not much help to either side.  Her role is getting a little murky, not sure her character is gonna make it through season 2.  But Grace Gealey won’t leave empty handed, as she’s engaged in real life to Trai Byers (Andre Lyon).

Congratulations to the Happy Couple

Speaking of Andre, Lucious’ offer to take everyone back into Empire must have been an all or nothing proposition, cause he still won’t forgive Dre. Although, he did take his idea to buy up the radio stations.  Dre tried to play on his father’s sense of family by telling him Rhonda’s pregnant. Lucious is happy for him (although worried about the mental health of the baby, as we witness more flashbacks of his crazy mother (Kelly Rowland).  But baby or no baby, he does not want Dre back at Empire.
