DOLEMITE IS MY NAME

I wanted to give more time to this review with it being Eddie Murphy, in a role that suits him perfectly – but once again, I’ve had zero time to write, between work and seeing 4 movies this week.

Going in, I thought Dolemite Is My Name (Directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) was going to parody a fictional Blaxploitation film with a fictional Eddie Murphy character; but when I realized it’s based on actual events and the real brother who embodied Dolemite, it brings another level of enjoyment to the film!

It puts me in mind of James Franco’s THE DISASTER ARTIST where he played the oddly legendary Tommy Wiseau and recreated the making of cult classic THE ROOM.

Similarly, Murphy recreates the making of Rudy Ray Moore’s DOLEMITE movie, and the karate chopping, wordsmith, pimp character Moore created.

There’s some storytelling cadence issues, but on the whole, the movie is perfectly cast, (Wesley Snipes is fantastically crazy) it’s uplifting, inspiring and a whole lot of fun!

Tinsel & Tine the Large Association of Movie Blogs (aka the LAMb) 3.5 outta 5

Two #MiniMovieReviews for the price of one – Most people will choose to see Dolemite Is My Name at home on Netflix and go to the theater to see GEMINI MAN, which does boast a couple of good action sequences worth mentioning, but otherwise the movie is all on one level. The hook is seeing how good the CGI is to make Will Smith look 30 years younger, but beyond that, the movie’s plot and investment is just eh. Smith does fine with the material he’s given in both roles. However, I expected much more from Director Ang Lee.
